Sandoval county NM is purple, gerrymandered and democrats lose by 100 - 300 votes. Michael is right the demographics are changing and the old tea party have to wrestle with deregulation, failed no tax policies that gave the community poor roads and inadequate services.

Yet in 2018 we stopped fracking in the middle Rio grande Rio rancho area. We did this by talking about clean water and clean air and healthy communities. We have diehard maga supporters. Since then it became even more polarized.

Right now there is a court case making it’s way through the system challenging the gerrymandering on Native American and Hispanic communities.

Our citizens group is working on doing something about the air pollution. Currently EPA standards on AQI (air quality Index) allows 3xs more premature deaths from air pollution. We are in the 66th percentile for lung cancer from pm2.5. We can change the local area to the WHO AQI standards because we changed the jurisdiction to do so. We can make standards more stringent. This means we have to

have public health education campaign.

The WHO AQI allows for interim target emissions drawdown based on health tract data. It will require a plan to draw down emissions.

Air pollution is expected to rise 400% by 2030 according to studies.

Our work is cut out for us. It work worth doing for our children. Ultimately most people love their children.

Wow, Elaine! Way impressive! And so inspiring! Thanks so very much for sharing what y'all are doing. What studies are you talking about for air pollution by 2030. That is AWFUL!!!!!!!

https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2022/dec/08/eco-wood-burners-produce-450-times-more-pollution-than-gas-heating-report

Our problem especially this time of year is wood burning, in the summer it’s wildfires. Pm2.5 and PM10 and ozone is what we are looking at.

We have taken our city AQI data complied by EPA and have made graphics that show, where, and for how long, the air quality remains bad. However this post cannot upload pictures. We have shown the increase in pollution as well.

Our citizens group have had experts calculate and vet that work.

The epa standards allow 3-5 x’s the premature deaths.

There were studies done for the recent soCalifornia air management plan that is geared for pollution reduction but also showed quadruple emissions, as they have continued to be emitted over the last 7 years. Different sources but still emitting PM2.5 and PM 10.

We don’t see EVs drawing down emission fast enough, especially, when industry is self reporting and there is little to no enforcement. Most regulators permit 90% of the their time.

When compared with air pollution rise and cumulative impacts since 2015 - we expect to see these numbers rise “quadruple”

Within the same time frame as they have been doing.

There needs to be a drawdown plan but it is BAU.

The WHO AQI gives us a way to do this regionally. don’t expect EPA to adopt WHO AQI — when I told them that we are going to pass this here in NM they started calling people and trying to negate our work according to the local EHD environmental health department.

I shared with EPA the graphics from their own data that they tried to refute. We are right on, with their own data and numbers, what they do is calculate allowable risks and premature deaths. They do not look at cumulative impacts even though it is suggested that they do.

We will have an article on this and posted website information along with links soon.

There are over 25,000 peer reviewed studies on this. We have presentation we gave to the air board that showed all of this.

We are the first in the country to do this

We are all Volunteers doing this and we want to post the correct data and not overstate. What people see is the epa data but they have not been shown the difference between the two standards.

First in the country, Elaine!! Thank you and Big Congrats so far to your fellow Volunteers on this vital project. Model for the country.

"I shared with EPA the graphics from their own data that they tried to refute. We are right on, with their own data and numbers, what they do is calculate allowable risks and premature deaths. Thanks so very much for sharing this. Will look for your work online. :-)

Elaine, BRAVO for what your group is doing about air quality in your region! I have no doubt you will prevail! Your comments are real eye-openers. And when one digs deeper, there are countless eye-openers to be had! I'm working with some groups on Cape Cod attempting, first, to close the local nuclear power station, Pilgrim, in Plymouth, MA and now currently on a new issue involving its decommissioning plans. The company in charge of decommissioning proposes to dump 1 million gallons of radioactive wastewater (which cooled the spent fuel rods) into Cape Cod Bay even through this would be a breach of their contract/permit and would be illegal! Yet they persist in moving forward with this plan. We have long ago discovered that the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) is merely a lapdog of the nuclear industry and has little interest in protecting the public. Your circumstances seem to point to a similar realization about the EPA. We greatly need both these agencies but I sense they are constrained into serving the interests of billionaires and the big industry they purport to regulate.

NM has a connected issue to your groups efforts. NM aid slated to be the national sacrifice zone for spent fuel rods from HOLTEC. In fact NM and several adjoining states are suing the NNSA because they intend to dump here at the WIPP site which is plagued with spills and fires in the caverns. And they are exempting NEPA. There are groups here focused on that with legislation coming forward in JAN ‘23 session. We have the legacy waste with Navajo and public communities still suffering the consequences of uranium mining. We are all connected.

Renewables will make a difference for our energy needs but mostly it is going to take PUBLIC POWER adoption. Mike is right we need to form a political movement to make the change.

We are focusing on clean air, water and soil to combat health impacts.

We also have the federal government wanting to build more PU pits and bomb manufacturing.

We need to adopt another no growth economic system and stop this madness

Expand full comment

Yes....we are all connected indeed. And Holtec is the decommissioning company we're dealing with. In fact, the alternative of dumping the wastewater in the ocean would be to truck it to established sites in locations like......New Mexico! There is no safe and reliable way to dispose of nuclear waste. And nuclear is no bridge from fossil fuel to renewable energy!

That is horrendous, Ann. Can't believe this is happening on the cape. Still catching my breath. NRC and EPA... NOT serving US. Thanks for enlightening us.

Thank you Mike!! It’s unfortunate the Democratic Party continues to chase the idea of being a moderate party and feeling like they need to do whatever is necessary to get the White suburban vote, especially the vote of White suburban women. I feel they are alienating lots of the very voters you spoke about in your podcast. As a Black women hello, I am one of your most loyal voters! Anyway, It’s unfortunate lots of our politicians don’t see this or choose to really engage and represent all people. I agree we need to organize and appreciate your giving us wonderful ideas! We will have to push through and mobilize for the greater good!

Michael, Since my updated password would not auto fill, was unable to send you my 60 second voice message. So here it is:

Something I share with friends and strangers is, Quebec Spring. I'm sure you recall that event.

For those who may have forgotten, when the Province of Quebec raised college tuition rates,

the people in that region demonstrated every night after work for 2 years.

It was students, families with strollers, and seniors. They made it festive and fun, banging with pots and pans, playing musical instruments, and bringing their pets along .

After 2 years they were successful, and the tuition hikes were rolled back.

I use this example as a point of inspiration, because they were diligent and didn't give up.

With diligence we can use your beautiful master plan of, The Blue Dots In A Red Sea to restore

our democracy to our FDR roots.

This is possible, we just have to try.

This episode is one of the most encouraging things I have heard in a long time. I was also touched to hear you mention Bernie.

We deserved a Sanders Presidency, and the DNC robbed us of that.

Can you imagine how different our world would be if it had been allowed to happen?

Expand full comment

TRUTH, Kelly Jean. So encouraging, this episode.

Bernie was such a threat to DNC ... both times. Because he spoke to all these people (including you and me!) who were eager for his message and his presidency for sure. And he was winning hearts and minds all over the country speaking his and our truth. Even purposely terrible media coverage, etc. couldn't stop him. He won over exactly the people Mike's telling us about in this episode. DNC couldn't have it. Rather have cheeto than Bernie and US!

They just stepped in and pushed him out. It was disgusting. I seriously considered not voting for prez... both times after that happened. Took months to calm my own jets and still vote for prez in Nov.

Michael, this is my favorite Blue Dot Tsunami so far! Great and useful statistics on the percentage of the Black and Hispanic populations in Mississippi and Texas and the continued lack of recognition, attention and funding from the DNC. Also good reminders about the Bronx, NY, Detroit, MI and Ferguson, MO whose voters have taken the lead in TWICE electing AOC and Rashida Tlaib and Cori Bush with little to no help from the Democratic Party. I've been sorely disappointed with the Party for years now, realizing how much they have in common with the GOP as regards the volume of corporatist elites, actually plutocrats, who fill their seats in Congress, all of whom are beholden to their corporate donors. I see how they are fearful of seizing the time and acknowledging/ acting on the obvious anger and disengagement of the working class and all the People of Color communities who they have ignored......this huge segment across the country who would come out to vote if the Democratic Party would send representatives to listen and respond to their respective needs and to fund the campaigns of young Progressive candidates who run to actually serve these communities. (By the way, whatever happened to Senate passage of HR 1, the For the People bill and the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, HR 4 - both passed by the 117th House in Congress? Were they sabotaged by Manchin and Sinema?) The majority of the American population actually align with the entire agenda of Bernie Sanders, now adopted by the Democratic Party in a less aggressive, outspoken form. Bernie has been proposing these exact policies for longer than 30 years with no diversion from them! Yet the Party has yet to support him or give him credit for his prescience and acumen. Indeed, they have only tried to marginalize him. This does not inspire my confidence in the intentions of the Democratic Party. My only hope is that grassroots organizing/ mobilizing/acting and the new engagement of our youth, women and POC communities will gradually result in the election of progressive candidates across the country who will replace the old white male, corporatist, career politicians who comprise the majority of the current Democratic Party. But the wheels of progress move slowly.

I work with an animal behaviorist. At dog training class she said, "what happens when you push your dog?" as she gently leaned her hand against a dog's shoulder. We're all flummoxed. "He pushes back! Otherwise he'd fall over!"

That's what happens when you argue with people. They push back and dig in. The way Michael does it is with gentleness and love. My behaviorist would approve! Guiding by the elbow and leading with treats, people move in his direction. What a great teacher!

Insightful and eloquently presented. The GOP is fracturing and fragmenting into obtuse, mutually antagonistic principalities, but so are the anti-progressive DEMS. Trump loathes McConnell, but Biden turns white when Bernie appears.
