I am 91 years old and will not live to see my country recover from this unthinkable election. And there is no way to keep from being incredibly disappointed by the stupidity of so many after believing during my life that most of Americans knew and appreciated the life so many had worked and fought for over since our founding. My heart weeps for my children and grandchildren who deserve better than they will have. They did their part in voting, but were defeated by massive ignorance. Bless you, Mike, for all you do. I have watched your actions since you won the school board election.

Wonderful response. I am right there with you - about to turn 80. We must be determined and generous enough to promise to come back very soon after death. The world needs this evolution of consciousness.

I am soon to be 78 and I feel cheated. Regressive people have knocked us out of sensible common sense solutions for decades and maybe centuries. I thought if I lived long enough we could have outrun the stupid and the greedy. Something smells about this last election. By chance on November first I drove past two Trump event venues with Trump paraphernalia pop up stores outside. Not a customer in sight. One of his events was at an airplane hanger due to his campaign stiffing the larger venue for rental due. On two occasions I witnessed hired staff delivering door knob hangers. Their eyes were glazed over and they stopped at no residences. My take is they were followed somehow on their phones and therefore walked the walk without doing the mission. All of this and we get the likes of Steven Miller.

Hitler had to contend with England, France, Italy, Australia and the US. With the US out of the picture everyone else is toast.

I am still giving to Mary Peltola as I believe as a native Alaskan she is much needed and has a great chance. I am paying for fewer substacks and reading time is much reduced of MSM. I am taking the extra time for health and time in the outdoors. I highly recommend those as it gets the mind and body some relief. I would much rather be celebrating Kamala's win.

I have been wondering how someone who ran such an insane, insulting, negative campaign compared to Harris' (which was grounded in and dignity and hope) could actually have won people over. So many people were hopeful and so very enthusiastic, I still don't understand what happened. I fear for so many people and what they will have to endure - and wonder whether there will ever be free and fair elections again once his band of fascists is finished gutting the system and silencing the free press. I do wonder whether anybody is really taking a close look at all the numbers/ballots ... wishful thinking?

There is a group of computer scientists who have sent a letter to Kamala Harris asking for a recount. https://freespeechforpeople.org/computer-scientists-breaches-of-voting-system-software-warrant-recounts-to-ensure-election-verification/

It is difficult for me to believe that the same people who overwhelmingly supported abortion right, and for that matter, Democratic legislators, turned around and voted for Trump. Maybe a few did. But not thousands. It smells bad. And just to clarify, I am not a conspiracy theorist.

I agree - the report of the results smells very fishy to me....and I am not a conspiracy theorist either. How could all 7 of the "swing states" have gone for DJT? Did anyone else remember his crafty assurance at one of his final rallies "Don't worry, you'll see we have a secret weapon." (or something along that line? and this was when Elon Musk started appearing close by.

we need transparency in voting, it is very very easy to steal an election electronically when there is no hard paper back up or when observers can't confirm that votes were counted properly. The CIA, Military Industrial Complex and evil billionaires could steal it with enough resources and money. There are many ways to create transparency - the only one I know is paper ballots but I'm sure there are more methods such as counting the numbers of people that go into a voting building and comparing it with the official result. Another is statistical methods that I know exist but I don't know exact details.

Expand full comment

Exactly. If we lose paper ballots (and the audit trail they provide) we lose democracy.

Expand full comment

48 of 50 states did have paper ballot back-ups. LA and TX(?) did not.

Expand full comment

I'm not an expert in this but ...

-They need to count the paper backups properly (i.e. don't double count some stacks).

-Prevent fake ballots from entering the system.

-Do statistical analysis to find fraud. Lots of ways to do statistical analysis by looking at the selections on the ballot plus counting the number of voters that enter the voting building and comparing that to the number of ballots from that particular building.

Hopefully we fix all the ways that the votes can be stolen.

Expand full comment

you overlooked the obvious. How many absentee ballots were mailed out and how many did the Postal Master deliver back and the districts of each datum?

Expand full comment

Texas does have a paper ballot that gets printed after one has made the selections on the computer screen. The paper ballot is then fed into a computer for counting but can be used for an audit.

Good points. I don't believe for one second this was a free and fair election (altho' that's not to say that racism, misogyny, Gaza, the economy, and ignorance aren't all also a part of it). I've been reading about some of the work Greg Palast has been doing the last few years concerning Trump and the GOP.

I just saw a video with Greg Palast - he has proof that over 2 million votes were suppressed. I don't know what's being done about it but Joe and Kamala were informed and apparently turned it over to lawyers.

It turns out that genocidal war criminals don't believe in free speech either. I'm really not surprised. Here is the post that was removed. Read what they don't want you to read.

My fellow Americans,

If you were hoping that the Democrats were going to win, you have to ask yourself—Why? They take bribes from the same corporate criminals as the Republicans.

If you were hoping that the Republicans were going to win, you have to ask yourself—Why? They take bribes from the same corporate criminals as the Democrats.

The truth of the matter is that both parties are corrupt. Heck, we don’t even have two political parties. There is just one gigantic ongoing criminal enterprise. Republican or Democrat, politicians are always going to do exactly what the “donors” want them to do and this will not change until we collectively demand an end to the system of legalized bribery that is the cause of all the problems in the world.

The Republicans and Democrats are using your tax dollars to fund, arm, and provide political cover for genocide—the worst crime known to man. To add insult to injury, these heinous war criminals say that they support Israel’s right to defend itself—like slaughtering thousands of innocent children could ever be considered self-defense. If this is not enough of a reason to withdraw your support from these two horrifically corrupt political parties—what the hell would be?

What if I told you that I could prove the leaders of the Republican and Democratic parties have been conspiring together to subvert the rule of law? You know, conspiring together to strip away everyone’s constitutional rights--including yours. Would proof of treason be enough of a reason to withdraw your support from these two bought and paid for political parties? Well, I have that proof. I put it in a book. All you have to do is read it. (There is a link for a free digital copy in this post.)

My name is Ted Martin. I have finished writing a book about my first hand encounters with a morbidly corrupt federal judicial system. The book is titled: The Illusion of Justice and contains documented, incontrovertible proof of widespread systemic corruption in the District Court for the Northern District of Illinois, the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals, the United States Supreme Court, the Administrative Office of United States Courts, the Senate Judiciary Committee, and the U.S. Department of Justice.

The Supreme Court not only ignored two of the most egregious cases of judicial misconduct imaginable (my cases) but also an amicus brief by former Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals Judge Richard Posner in which he blows the whistle on rampant corruption in the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals.

Judge Posner’s amicus brief is posted on the Supreme Court’s website at www.supremecourt.gov and can be accessed by typing in the following case number: Martin v. Living Essentials (Case No. 17-8352) (Go to CASE DOCUMENTS at the bottom of the web page and click Docket Search. Enter 17-8352 in the box and click SEARCH. When Docket for 17-8352 appears, click it to find Judge Posner’s amicus brief.)

It will be painfully obvious to anyone who reads my book (or Judges Posner’s amicus brief) that the Supreme Court denies certiorari without even bothering to read the petitions submitted by the citizens of the United States. This obscene betrayal of the public trust is a clear-cut violation of every Justice’s judicial oath and a crime under federal law that is commonly referred to as honest services fraud.

In short, my book proves that the leaders of both the Republican and Democratic parties have been conspiring together to pack the courts with corrupt corporate judges who will never side with the American people. This was abundantly clear when Senator Chuck Schumer and the other Democrats on the Senate Judiciary Committee repeatedly refused to use irrefutable evidence of judicial misconduct by Amy Coney Barrett (a Republican nominee) at her Supreme Court confirmation hearing.

This bipartisan band of seditious conspirators also refused to address the underlying corruption in clear violation of their oath to “support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic.”

The only difference between the two major political parties is the rhetoric. The special interest groups running this country don’t give a damn which bribe taking stooge you vote for or even if you vote at all. They have already successfully rigged every election by controlling “our” choices.

The leaders of both the Republican and Democratic parties have been caught red-handed conspiring to pack the courts with corrupt judges who will never side with you. If there was ever a reason to be a one issue voter, this is it. Besides, any politician caught lying about their fidelity to the Constitution and laws of the United States is obviously lying about everything—particularly their agenda.

Republicans push the corrupt corporate agenda. Democrats pretend to be opposed. Together, they sell their offices to the highest bidders. They foment war for the military industrial complex, promote racism for the prison industrial complex, refuse to restrict access to assault weapons for the gun manufactures, permit large quantities of toxic cancer causing chemicals to be dumped into our air, land, and water for the chemical manufactures, deny needed medical care to our country’s citizens for the health insurance and pharmaceutical industries, and turn a willful blind eye to the catastrophic effects of global warming for the fossil fuel industries. The list of their greed fueled crimes against humanity goes on and on.

Voting your current elected representatives out of office should be a no brainer. But, to make sure that they are not replaced with another batch of equally corrupt corporate stooges, we’re also going to have to take back both the Republican and Democratic parties and get the money out of politics.

While this may appear to be a daunting task, all we really need is a sound plan. After giving this matter some careful consideration, I have the following proposal: We agree to put aside all of our ideological differences and unite as Americans in support of the Constitution of the United States.

If you read my book, it really won’t be that difficult. You will know who the real enemy is and it certainly isn’t your fellow citizens. We just need to become one issue voters. Ignore their contrived wedge issues, bullshit talking points, and cringe worthy campaign ads. If they are not fighting tooth and nail to get the money out of politics—don’t legitimize them with your vote.

Seriously, if in doubt—throw them out. Besides, any government official who is not forcefully calling for the resignations of the corrupt leaders of their own political party is, by definition, violating their oath to “support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic.”

Whether Republican or Democrat, a treasonous corporate criminal is a treasonous corporate criminal, they serve the same master and nothing is going to change until we get the money out of politics.

*You get the money out of politics by publicly funding elections, banning all campaign contributions, and, in exchange for their broadcasting/operating licenses, requiring news organizations to give every candidate for public office an equal amount of free advertising space.

In the future, I may write a book titled: The Illusion of Journalism. But for now, I’m just going to say that the media is not going to help anyone blow the whistle on their partners in crime. In the past four years, I couldn’t find a single news organization that hadn’t sold us out.

All an honest journalist would have to do is read Judge Posner’s amicus brief to know that the courts are irretrievably corrupt. Reading my book will conclusively show that the courts are corrupt by design.

If you want a government that actually acts in your best interests, I urge you and everyone you know to read my book as soon as possible. You can get a digital copy of my book free of charge at the link below: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1_vaMH1riLodzOfQn0kI7ow0RDrPM0NqE/view?usp=sharing

P.S. I blame the Federalist Society for the corruption in the federal judicial system. The six so-called conservative justices on the Supreme Court, Mitch McConnell, and all the Republican Senators on the Senate Judiciary Committee are members of the Federalist Society. Donald Trump picked “his” judicial nominees from lists provided by the Federalist Society.

I didn’t know that the Democrats were in on it until I tried to give them proof of judicial misconduct by Amy Coney Barrett at her Supreme Court confirmation hearing. If you would like to read about their reprehensible conduct, you can skip ahead to the Postscript on page 221 of my book. But, for goodness sake, read the rest of the book. The courts are more corrupt than you can possibly imagine!

The judges in both of my cases incorporated the defendant’s fraudulent defenses into their opinions even after I pointed out the fraud in every brief that I filed. These “judges” are clearly taking dictation from corporate defense counsel without even reading the plaintiff’s briefs. These black robed grifters clearly fixed both of my cases. But, by far, the worst part was knowing that they were systematically violating everyone’s constitutional rights—they just got caught violating mine.

We are now living through the beginning of the end of the American Empire. What comes next will be the slow and painful decline of this country. It'll take a while to fully decline, but it's safe to say it started. I'd argue it actually started post 9/11 to be honest and is just accelerating. The decline of our empire will give way to a new empire, most likely China. All things considered given the damage we cause on the world stage, maybe it's not the worst thing. There never was a shining city on the hill.

Truman (a Democrat) had a very hard decision to make vis-a-vis the bomb. And presidents (save one) since then have come to the conclusion that nuclear weapons cannot be used in war, unless we decide we no longer wish to survive on this planet. That one exception was just re-elected.

Perhaps. It does feel to me that you could bisect American history into a pre-9/11 and post 9/11 world. I will consider your point though about Nixon.

Having lived through it, I recall one news item: on the day Nixon was re-elected, the Michigan State University paper ran an editorial page in all black, with a small white square in the middle that declared "Four more years". Somewhere in the files I still have a copy. They could run that again now. The situation is even more dire.

In my estimation, the last honorable Republican president was Dwight David Eisenhower. Not since then have we seen a Republican of his stature. And we likely never will.

Under Eisenhower, we helped Britain overthrow a democratically elected government in Iran, cancelled elections in Vietnam and started sending in advisors to support the Diem regime that we installed, overthrew the democratically elected government in Guatemala, invaded Lebanon, and increased military spending, slow-walked the Brown vs. Board of Ed. decision, etc. etc. It's easy to see the past through rosy glasses. But don't kid yourself.

I'll stand by my observation. Since Ike, we've seen a precipitous decline in the GOP presidents. I hope we have reached the nadir, but then there's Vance.

Andrew, l am disappointed to hear you say that it may be best that the American empire is supplanted by the Chinese empire. There certainly have been problems in the world caused by the USA. but we must remember the 10,000 dead in the student demonstrations in China in 1989. Surely the U.S. must still strive to be a beacon of hope for the world in future in spite of the recent disastrous election result.

No world power lasts forever. They cycle in and out. The wildcard now is nuclear weapons. We're already not the greatest country in the world like Jeff Daniels movie clip states.

You rock Moore! I'm a white female, I voted for Harris, I'm ashamed, and I don't believe the win.

The question isn't why Harris lost, it's why did Trump win?

My 2 cents:

This is not the time to cry, whine, look back, analyze or point fingers. There's time for that later.

There are a few weeks left in Biden's presidency. Didn't someone say it's better to act now and seek forgiveness later? It's good advice. Those might soon not be possible.

When there is a window of opportunity, the people with the power, will, ability & smarts should seize the day.

#1 Biden needs to send the ERA to the Library of Congress, as it has now been ratified by enough states. DO IT NOW!

And do what? Remove the W keys from keyboards in the Whitehouse again? Dems had the power years 1-2 of Biden. That was when they should have taken massive initiatives. All Biden can do now is some executive whatevers n pardons. It's too late.

I think your nihilistic woe-is-me attitude isn't helpful either. You're as bad as Biden

Uplifting as always, Michael. Thanks. I'm feeling better but know that a vile, hate-filled administration will soon occupy our country. It will be hell-bent on retribution and the destruction of all we hold dear. Active resistance is called for, not unlike that seen in the Warsaw Ghetto or in Tiananmen Square. It's my country, too, and I, for one, will not watch as they trash it.

All I can say is that we are SO SCREWED. Well, also...I WILL NOT GO BACK. NEVER GIVE UP. NEVER SURRENDER!

Who did this to us is the question. How were the results so quickly known? I just can't believe these results. Was the interference from another country?

AND will we survive as a country for 4 yrs? What will happen at the end of 4 yrs. HMMM

I noticed the one battle that our fathers and mothers and grandfathers and grandmothers fought that you didn't mention was the fight against Nazism and fascism in WWII. And that is a battle we may have to fight again. No compromise with fascists and Nazi sympathizers. It's going to get worse, yes it is.

I think you are unfortunately correct. These racists have stood back and stood by for years. Foaming at the mouth to march down main Street USA. We must resist.

Kamala’s loss

White nationalist and misogynist America sank a sophisticated, well-oiled and well-built ship of Kamala Harris in a spectacular way. These were the two basic factors for Kamala’s loss but greed and religious orthodoxy of all three monotheistic religions also played their role in it. All other blame games and finger pointing by our self-proclaimed expert analysts are simply their verbal diarrheas. Kamala was the unique presidential candidate who faced opposition from both of those groups. No other candidate faced opposition like that.

Biden won; he was a white man.

Hilary Clinton lost; she was white but a woman.

Obama won; he was black but a man.

How sad it is that the racial prejudice will narrow the vision of a large number of white women who will be willing to sacrifice their and their daughters’ rights for equality, dignity and health.

How sad it is that the mostly blue collar working white men will not vote for a woman but strengthen the hands of their rich and powerful exploiters.

How sad it is that male chauvinistic black men, Latinos, Muslims and other minorities will support a deeply flawed, pathological liar and a known opportunist over a decent, highly qualified and compassionate woman.

How sad it is that the self-proclaimed people of God will sell their souls to a morally corrupt man over a woman of character and virtues.

I remember the time in the Grant Park of Chicago where the newly elected President Obama gave a victory speech. I saw teary eyes in the crowds of white, black and brown people. At that time, I thought that the USA had broken all the shackles of her past and was ready to show the world a new dawn of justice and progress. It was my premature illusion. Obama’s presidency let loose the hidden forces of racism that emerged in the form of the Tea Party movement and the Supreme Court decision in favor of Citizen United. Though Obama was lucky to win the second term, the seeds of racial and gender prejudices were sown. This brought Donald Trump on the stage who exploited every opportunity and openly ignited the flames of hatred, fear and division. Not only did he defeat Hillary Clinton but he also brainwashed the Republicans and transformed the Republican Party into a party that no one ever thought it would become. This was a great loss for the checks and balances of our government.

America has great influence on many countries in the world. Many of the citizens of those countries watch and follow the trends in America. The idea of authoritarianism over democracy is firming its roots in those countries as well.

Corporate greed and the Anti-Tax movement are also the byproducts of this trend.

The dream of a just and peaceful world seems to remain a dream for a long time. The fall of America is imminent since it is imploding within itself. It is a mighty country and the impact of its fall will be gradual. The tragedy is that no other country or civilization is ready to take over. Maybe another Bolshevik type of revolution is in the making!

Just one exception to your post: Harris is pro-genocider Izrahell. So much for character and virtues.

Expand full comment

Outstanding summary. In complete agreement, although inflation also had a devastating role, and I don’t think America’s fall will be gradual. Without the hatred of black people, women and other minorities, the MAGA movement has nothing. It is the product of a deep American desire for punishing authority: the straight, white Christian male dominating all, from household to country, with death as the punishment for non-compliance. The day has arrived that they will get their wish and I am encouraging everyone to prepare.

This is one of the best pieces from Michael in many, many months. What I'm doing: playing "Desolation Row" and "Life During Wartime" a LOT. Resolving to be more active (a LOT more active) in my union and in the militant groups within it pushing for "strike readiness". Reading. Giving up at electoral poli-tricks because the genocidal screw-you-with-a-smile Biden administration was just "fascism lite" as far as I'm concerned. We got our work cut out for us that's for sure. I often don't agree with Michael, but I know he's honest, committed, super-talented, and always (especially now) worth listening to and thinking about.

What happened, Michael, is what was apparent from the start. KH, as wonderful as she was, just wasn't the sharpest arrow in our quiver. I knocked on doors and donated to all, but it was perceptible from responses, she just didn't project the gravitas and leadership qualities that the snake-oil salesman somehow did.
