Common Sense best encapsulates the ideal of the United States, and even greater, the ideals of all humankind.

It was more than simply a political pamphlet, but a manifesto that society is still striving to achieve. Monarchy in the sense it was written about in the 18th century is no longer here, but the same entrenched power of wealth has the same result on society at large. Ignorance remains a threat to us all, and understanding the causes of our problems is always a challenge to fully grasp, but we can strive for something better.

"We have it in our power to begin the world over again." is more than just a quote, but an everlasting truth, that out of destruction of the flood, where Noah built an ark, or out of the destruction that Neocons, Corporate America, and now Trumpism has brought onto the world, we can build something better. A true, just government.

Perhaps the sentiments in Common Sense are still too early for our times, 250 years later, but it remains something to strive for. And something all Americans should read!
