Bernie never used fear...he used the excitement of the win to motivate people and it worked as he had an incredible amount of grassroots support and money come in! Big money donated lots, but Bernie's followers donated more. I know as I was one of them. We need excitement and focus on the win, not fear. We need to replace the democratic party conservatives with good progressives who are not tied to big money, and are in congress to fight for what is right for the masses and our democracy.

And the good news is we don't need Bernie or anyone else to get us excited and motivated. We have enough reasons of our own to motivate us to get out and get it done!

'I am not going to vote because I don't like any of them'

Then vote against what you don't like !

- restrictions on women's rights

- environmental protections being stripped

- foreign policy afoul

- vote redistricting

You may not like the candidate but can find common ground on the issues!

Thank you Michael for reminding us

American Capitalism is PREDATORY CAPITALISM. The average citizen is prey. Other Democracies prioritize the average citizen, Capitalism for All. What else would a government do besides protecting it's citizens, encouraging business but also understand that businesses don't exist in a vacuum? A healthy educated population paid fairly for it's participation in society strengthens a Nation. The existing inequality is tearing us apart and we are primed to blame each other rather than the politicians.

IDK Mike. This article was a bit thin - We're going to win no matter what! umh. that sounds a bit like the empty pages from TFG healthcare plan due in 2 weeks. Dems still need to be pushed by the Dem leaders. I suggest they get people mad over Roe as the tip of the iceberg. We need a hotbutton issue like the Magats use fear - the illegals are invading! Nothing should motivate Dems more than Roe and what that decision means for all the other stuff Magats have come after and will expand into. IMHO.

Ummm. You realize that we're already part way there, right? Social security, medicare, Medicaid, just to name a few. Unfortunately we have more socialism for big corporations than we do for regular people. It's the MAGA crowd that wants to get rid of it for regular people.

Socialized programs do not eliminate capitalism.

Socialism is not communism.

We are not “part way there” Not when the GQP and SCOTUS are religious fascists ready to strip away every right we have fought for.

Maybe lets not say silly superficial things like “Captitalism has to go”, y’know, unless youre in 7th grade.

How about this instead: “Captialism must be regulated!”?

Although to be fair, all this stuff about Socialism vs. Capitalism…it’s sort of nonsense. It’s not defined in our constitution that we are one or the other! They are both economic systems! Capitalism is not engraved on our constitution! If we can’t regulate it, which it seems we can’t, we can get rid of it! It’s not working!

There’s a diff btwn “can’t” and “haven’t”. Of course we are capable of regulating corporations! Good Lord! We are the nation that went to the moon, “Not because it was easy but because it was hard”. (JFK)

First we need to defeat the red-hats. Then

We need to muzzle the media corps spreading dangerous, destructive conspiracies by enacting sensible (not draconian) regulation. (Fox, Breitbart, OAN, et al)

At that point we not only can enact reasonable regulations on many industries, but I suggest we MUST do so.

Kathryn Lewandowsky's avatar

I agree that we haven't. The question is will the Democrats regulate those corporations if they win? I would hope so, but they can be just as bought with corporate dollars as Republicans.

I think China and Russia do have capitalism.

Expand full comment
DeeDee D's avatar

China tried it successfully for years due to Deng Xiao Ping. But Xi isnt happy w those results and has pulled back and is attempting to redistribute wealth thru huge taxes. China now sumply imprisons oeople who were wildly successful and just took most of their assets to redistribute to the govt.

russia is not at all capitalistic. Theyre a true oligarchy. Companies are owned by Putin’s friends who give him a lot of the profits. The gov owns everything else.

China is slightly more authentically communist. Russia’s just got a deranged dictator. (Im not claiming Xi is not a dictator, and he is capable of great cruelty, but he is not demonstrably deranged like Putin. )

But neither practice capitalism as we understand it.

Oh! I was shocked you couldn't find anything good to say about Biden. He's actually been amazing and done many wonderful things... but you're threatening to dump him? And who do you think will be better (name someone on the Left who can WIN...) I'm kinda disgusted.

I'm sorry about the student loans, but we knew the way he did it wasn't quite legal, and so they called his bluff. We always knew that from the get go... why're you making it sound like a big surprise?

I think Mike is confused about who is the actual enemy here.

Expand full comment
Tim West's avatar

Of course! We voters are smart enough to know that Biden isn't the one running in this election, and that we can express our displeasure with a decision he made in a more appropriate way than voting for a bunch of Republicans who will REALLY screw us over. We know the difference between making an adroit chess move with surgical precision and bombing the whole planet back into the Stone Age when we don't get exactly what we want one time. So let's DO the right thing and get others to join us. We can do this.

It’s Greed. Greed is destroying our country. Almost 100% of the battles between republicans and democrats can be distilled down to money. Republicans essentially want to end every social safety net program in existence. Dems want more and better safety nets.

Campaign donations are plain and simple, bribes.

Getting elected to Congress these days is like winning the lottery. If we are going to survive as a democracy we’re going to have to remove money as an incentive for people (sleezebags) to run for Congress.

If we get a majority of Dems in both the Senate & the House after this Nov. election, one of the first things we must, MUST do is make all campaign donations illegal and allow only public money for campaigning. Each candidate should get the same amount of public money & the fec should keep track of receipts. When it’s gone, they’re done. There’s no more money allowed.

As things stand now, republicans have to lie to their constituents constantly and scapegoat democrats about why prescriptions are so expensive, why health care is ridiculously costly, why a college education guarantees that college graduates won’t be able to save money and/or afford to start a family, even if they have good paying jobs. Back when I went to college Congress mandated that student loans have very low interest rates. Why can’t Congress mandate that again? Oh, sorry, the GOP would scream bloody murder...how dare Congress give college students a break! It might incentivize more people to get a college education for heaven’s sake!

But here’s what really chaps my behind; the obvious trajectory of republican goals is to impoverish the middle class. What else do they think could possibly happen if they: end or privatize social security, (privatization is but a stepping stone on the way to ending it) end medicare/medicaid, end free school lunches, end head start, repeal the Affordable Care Act and destroy public education for elementary & high schools students, forcing parents to pay for their childrens’ education out of their own pockets.

If all of those republican “wish list” items turn into reality, there won’t be a middle class. There will be only two classes of Americans--the wealthy & the poor. Here’s the part that chaps--Who do they think is going to buy the products & services Corporate America is selling? Think about that. The thing that made America the wealthiest, most powerful nation on earth is an upwardly mobile middle class. And Republicans are all about...can’t wait to destroy--the very thing that got us to where we are today. How dumb is that?

But, it’s even worse than I described for one main reason--corporations are so fixated on the GOP potentially lowering their tax rate & indulging them by ignoring anti-trust laws--allowing them to charge whatever they want because they have no competition--that they’re overlooking the reality that their customers won’t be able to afford what they’re selling. Duh! Apparently Corporate leaders are no longer required to be very smart...or more appropriately put--they only have to be as smart as it takes to screw over their employees and fool consumers.
