You know, it's funny. I turned on NPR this morning to find out the results, and after hearing about one Democratic victory after another, and then I heard something like "Well, these races and those races are still too close to call. The Republicans still could win those seats. It's still possible they could pull it off. They could have a victory... (and on and on like that for several unnecessary sentences), but it just doesn't look like they're going to have the big red wave they were supposed to have. Let's discuss this."

I said, "Let's not," and turned it off.

I see what you mean.

"Let's not." I love it! 😂👍 What is *wrong* with them?! I avoided all media yesterday because I couldn't bear to hear that kind of horse-race yammering. Went outside. Walked through some colorful trees, with the sun on my face. Looks like we both chose wisely. 🙂👍❤️

I quit reading cnn.com quite a while ago due to their constant dissing of Joe Biden.. And even huffpost and politico recently started throwing barbs at Biden and Dems..I couldn't stomach it anymore....

Yes, NPR has been dissapointing - they seem to be going more toward the main-stream

I haven’t listened to NPR for quite some time, but it’s not mainstream to me. They have become a Republican news outlet! And, in many ways, so has MSNBC. At least, that’s how I see it!

Because they have corporate sponsors.

Expand full comment

They always have had corporate sponsors. But, given the tax breaks they get from the Republican Party, and our desire that they pay their fair share, their greed now exceeds any pretense of support for our democracy!

Well,

I haven’t gone to bed either, but I’ve been at work. Thank you for your 40 days of fighting for Democracy and Women’s Rights!

More like 18,250 days of fighting for our democracy and rights. But yes, the last 40 have truly been some of the most important!

Great job. You held blue throughout. Up here in MA, we held blue. Hassan help blue in NH. Michael was right - ignore the polls and just vote. Congrats. I think Fetterman will do a great job. He cares about the people of PA (my brother and his family all live there).

Joe, just thought you’d like to hear this little chat I had ; Just talked to Mom, She’ll be 92 in January. “Karen! Who won for governor? “Shapiro did, Mom” “Not the bald guy?” “No, the Jewish guy” “Oh Thank Heavens! He’s a bad man! Even the Catholic ladies at my lunch table said don’t vote for him, nobody can tell me what I can and can’t do with my own body, they said.” “It’s all good, Mom” “Whew!” She was so relieved! Thought you’d like to know that some of our seniors are really paying attention.

Karen - your Mom sounds sharp as a tack! Good for her, and all those seniors who voted in support of the right things. Freedom, decency, women's rights, the middle class, immigrants, etc etc. Tell you Mom we said Thanks! And let's root for Warnock in GA, and hope we win AZ or NV senator race.

I heard Fetterman’s acceptance speech last night! He had to have been exhausted. But, he truly was so grateful to his supporters, and thrilled! I didn’t watch the debate, but he spoke just fine. He didn’t sound impaired at all. It was an emotional night! For someone who almost died six months ago, he’s made an extraordinary comeback, and now he’s got a few more months to recover without all the daily pressure of campaigning! It was inspiring!

That debate was not the right forum for him, but he got thru it. Last night, he sounded great. So happy for our PA friends.

Such heartening news Mike! I worked all day yesterday as an election inspector in a small rural, very conservative upstate NY community... the voting numbers were sky high compared to other elections. This is an extremely Republican district - probably 5 to 1 - and I felt it was a small example of what must be happening throughout the US and it worried me a little bit. In that very Trumpy, very poor community they talked about inflation and economy as their motivation for voting. They even made sure that their children - first time voters - registered and voted! It was difficult work, but I was able to get a sense of how these individuals think and how their lives are affected on a daily basis.

It was a long, long day (17 hours) but my husband and I felt it was a privilege to do this work... we were exhausted at the end of the day and went straight to bed. So it was with some trepidation that I turned on the news this morning only to be pleasantly surprised! Thank you Michael for keeping hope

alive these last few weeks.

I would like to give a shout out for election inspectors... in our conservative community, Democratic inspectors are in short supply so we get moved around! This was our first major election and we are committed to the process. Think about signing up for this task! It is exhausting work but I feel privileged to do it!

I worked my local polling place yesterday in Manchester, NH, and was very heartened to see so many new and first time voters. I was one of the deputy registrars and we had way more Democratic new voters than Reps or Undeclared (what NH calls Independent) voters. I'm sure they are who kept Hassan and Pappas in Congress and fought off that traitor "general" Bolduc and IQ45** wingnut Leavitt.

Another heartfelt thank you! As I wrote above, I think that everyone who worked in polling places should write about what they learned. It’s all so positive, and what you observed is important!

Nov 9, 2022·edited Nov 9, 2022

Everyone I worked with were super nice and helpful. I said "Thank you for voting" regardless of what political party (or not) that they registered for. We only had one female trumplican wingnut who started yelling at someone else while standing in the line where voters take their forms from us to bring to the people who put them in the voter rolls but nothing got out of hand. The cop that was there had eyeballs on her but didn't need to come in to remove her. We also had people coming in to video the process a couple of times and one guy was removed for illegal videoing. At the very end of the night, we had two female college students - at least, that's who they said they were - but they had no clue that they were in the wrong place and said the college never told them where to vote, so it smelled fishy to me, but they didn't cause a scene. I thought they may have been red party "plants" to "prove" that "anyone can vote."

Thank you. I think every adult of voting age should do it at least once just to see how our voting process works and maybe it would shut the skeptics up, lol.

A heartfelt thank you! I wonder whether other Democrats were frightened that they would be harassed. What you learned is very important! And, we Democrats need to hear it! All of the culture war stuff is just noise to people who are struggling to survive, and feel that no one cares about them. In truth, the Democratic Party is there to help them, and Republicans could care less. Maybe, after you sleep and recover, you could write to Michael about your experience!

Sad about Tim Ryan’s loss in Ohio. We’ll need to keep pushing forward there. God knows Texas is a problem and yet Beto sure keeps an eye on the prize. Micheal, you too keep keeping on despite the nay, Nate Cohens. Onward we go!

I've been somewhat cynical on change happening here in Texas. Time and again, I've been disappointed when hopes of us turning blue get dashed. Because of that, I've been like, why would anyone even bother running when the Republicans will just win again and again?

But then, looking at Beto--hell, any Democrat--running, despite the odds, has told me something: he still believes in Texas. He and others still want to make it better. They've been knocked down again and again, and yet, they don't give up. They think our state is worth it.

But I have to wonder: is my state still worth it?

It would be interesting to see what effect Beto had on some down ticket results. He definitely energizes a base constituency who otherwise might not vote. Need to emphasize that every race matters all the way down to school boards and sheriffs.

I’m in PA — and I fell into bed at 4 am. To say I love ❤️ you, Michael, would be an understatement. I knew you were sadly right in 2016, and I was praying you were correct in 2022. Don’t know how to thank you enough — you got me through this stressful time. Every time I got despondent about democracy, I repeated my secret mantra, over and over, which was “Michael says it’s going to be okay” and — you know what— it was! Thanks again a trillion times — and onward! Very sad about Tim Ryan and Beto because those two guys are two of the very best we have. Be well and keep on keeping on because we need you now more than ever.🙏🙏🙏

I am thankful and heartened to see what has happened on what has been reported about the results. I think that the orange orangutan is not having a good morning in florida in spite of their huge win, now florida has turned red but they seem to be walking away from him, humiliating to say the least. I think of crime, and I see the hypocrisy of all these republicans when children get murdered in mass numbers in their schools and yet, nothing is done about this and they are so fresh as to run on crime against the dems whom are the only ones willing to do something about this. I am hopeful that when all votes are counted we will be holding the senate and that the house, if lost, is only by very few seats. I think that the American people definitely said that they do want a democracy. More work to be done, more people should decide to run for office so we can continue to build a shield that protects our country from all the bad actors. we need to make sure we preserve our way of living.

Well said. It will be great and possibly even funny to watch DeSantis and Trump go after each other. They both seem like dogs who once they sink their teeth in, will not let go. Both very vain and driven. Hope it rips the magat party in two - best thing that could happen for democracy.
