This election is far to important to do anything right now but support Kamala. We are all aware that it's a tightrope to walk and she is walking it the best she can while still being vice president. I think your influence is better served by supporting her. After the election when she has real power then feel free to give her a piece of your mind on this issue. But yelling at our vice president to negotiate a ceasefire is useless and harmful. Please turn your influence back to full support! After the election when she is president you can be angry all you want!
No love lost? Really? These photos were taken in July, after Harris urged Netanyahu to end the devastating war in Gaza. Currently, that is the best she can do--the vice president cannot act unilaterally to end the Israel's brutality in Gaza.
If she is elected president, I have no doubt that Harris will do everything in her power to forge a cease fire and to urge a 2-state solution. I have many doubts that Trump will do nothing, or make matters worse.
Michael, your influence and protestations would be better served AFTER Harris is elected president. If you keep this up, you may be responsible for another Trump presidency. Good luck to Palestine if that happens. He will arrest protestors and throw us in jail.
How about nuclear war? You like nuclear war? (At that moment, will you say, "Well, at least we elected Kamala?") You need to understand how close we are coming.
Trump is able to control people by using fear of war and violence in order to get people to support him by claiming that he is the only one who can stop violence.
Margaret - I agree with your comment, and I don't quite know the way around this. I've been really concerned about Michigan since October 7th of last year. While I fully understand the sadness and anger coming from the Arab community, I just keep hoping they'll take a leap of faith with VP Harris because Netanyahu actively wants Trump to be elected. I think that is something people of European descent can safely say to the Arab population without being condescending. This isn't about the Muslim ban; it's that the slaughter will absolutely escalate. There will be no guardrails or anyone trying to stop Netanyahu behind the scenes. Biden and Harris are now threatening to cut off Israel and they are trying to deal with an unreachable monster (Netanyahu). Yes, the majority of Jewish voters will vote for the Democrat, but we cannot underestimate AIPAC (see Jamal Bowman and Cori Bush). I like MM's idea, however, to get a mix of Arab and Jewish people on stage and calling for a cease fire. She has been calling for a cease-fire, but right now, there's only so much she can do. And in all of this, we also have to remember the people of Ukraine. They're done for if Trump wins. What a mess.
We don't know what sensitive peace talks may be in progress that Harris should avoid discussing at this point. I want to see the U.S. withhold weapons and give aid as soon as possible or faster. However, international relations are more complicated than we are allowed to know about.
I absolutely agree with this. One of Trump’s many examples of unfit Presidential behavior was and has always been disclosing (for bragging purposes) confidential information and planning - to the point that the people around him didn’t tell him some of the most sensitive information about the military he supposedly led. Also, as one who wants nothing more for Gaza and the Palestinian people and Israel & the Israeli people, than for hostage release and cease fire; also know that Biden/Harris have been working hard for a year behind the scenes to lower the temperature, support our allies and support the innocent people in Gaza. None of us know all that has NOT happened because of the work they have done. And most certainly things would be in no better - and likely much worse - shape of it were a Trump administration in the same position. Harris has been clear that she calls for cease of fire and release of hostages. But the US insisting does not magically make it so. Just as it wouldn’t if we were the country/leadership/government in the reverse. These calculations and decisions keep good people in the highest roles of the Biden admin up at night. And I assure you if Harris loses; so will all involved in the Middle East.
I agree with you. I just finished Bob Woodward's book "War". There is so much we do not know about foreign relations. No, VP Harris is not President Biden. But, Biden and his Secretary of State Tony Blinken and others have been working very hard. Netanyahu has thwarted their efforts on every side - from aid to Gaza to working with other friendly neighbors in the surrounding area. The United States cannot unilaterally go in and tell a sovereign country what to do. Do I wish they would withhold funds/arms? Probably. But, then there are issues that follow that, too. Then, innocent Israelis are also killed. Should more be done for Palestinians? DEFINITELY!! But, there is a "high-wire" act that must be done with bordering nations to get it in there. And, with something as sensitive as this, I do not think this is something she should discuss while Joe Biden is still President. She has already said we need a ceasefire. She has said this to the Prime Minister's face. She said she believes in a two state government. What more can she really do?
"There is so much we do not know about foreign relations." Ah... the veil of self-imposed ignorance.
What we DO know is damning enough. The United States is sending horrendous weapons -- like 2000 lb bunker busters that we'd NEVER use on civilian populations -- and Israel is using them on civilians.
Your "high-wire" act is a type of defense worthy of Eichmann. As is the "no-talk" rule.
What more can she do? ... RESOLVE to put our nation BACK into compliance with our laws. ZERO weapons to nations involved in crimes against humanity. OUR laws. US laws.
I am willing to discuss this and listen to what you have to say. You obviously have done more research than I. I am looking into it. What Israel has done is unacceptable. I am appalled by what has been done to the Palestinians in Gaza in the name of getting rid of terrorists. In that, we agree.
I do not appreciate the comparison to Eichmann, however.
The Eichmann reference comes from Hannah Arendt -- who reported on the trial in Jerusalem.
Zionism has turned Israel into a fascist, racist state -- the complete antitheses of Judaism. For a 50-minute crash course, I am putting a link to a presentation by Rabbi Yaakov Shapiro. "How Liberal Zionism Strengthens Fascist Zionism"
Okay---first of all, thank you for the link. Secondly, I felt the Eichmann comparison was directed at me, personally; but, now I realize what (I think) you were saying - that too many people like myself use the same arguments as he did to "justify" the unjustifiable.
That was not my intention, at all. I still believe there are sensitive matters that cannot be publicized, but the "intent" and the "stance" taken by officials should be. AND, the people of our country have the right to disagree and voice their disagreement.
This has awakened in me a curiosity to learn more about the Israeli state. Just that one article has solidified my opinion that the United States cannot become a "religious" republic. I am a Christian, but as an American, I believe in freedom of religion as stated in the First Amendment.
To this point, Netanyahu is complete control, and he's operating from a decades old playbook that leads to war with Iran. Go back to PNAC -- project for a new American Century. Islamophobia is driving these people.
I truly feel your despair. Thank you VERY much for sharing this with us.
I was born and raised in Michigan (Dearborn). So many of our Arab-American brethren are from Lebanon.
The Capitol Hill Citizen reports that Netanyahu got over 50 BIPARTISAN standing ovations during his speech to our Congress. The same Netanyahu, who, as the towers were falling on 9/11, said (translated from Hebrew): "This is very good for us."
Biden could have reined this in by the end of October 2023. Blinken is an agent of Zionist Israel. He knows damned well that Israel is going to exterminate or ethnically cleanse EVERY Palestinian in Gaza north of the Netzarim Corridor -- declare it as a military occupation zone, and then open it up for settlement.
Trump would be much more favorable to Bibi than Harris for financial reasons, such as real estate opportunities after the Palestinians are wiped out, and Bibi knows it. How do we know Netanyahu isn't continuing the war just like Nixon backchanneled to continue the Vietnam War so LBJ would lose? Also, Reagan backchanneled so that the hostages wouldn't be released until after the election so that he would beat Carter. It's a proven strategy.
The Logan Act (1 Stat. 613, 18 U.S.C. § 953, enacted January 30, 1799) is a United States federal law that criminalizes the negotiation of a dispute between the United States and a foreign government by an unauthorized American citizen. The intent behind the Act is to prevent unauthorized negotiations from undermining the government's position.[2] The Act was passed following George Logan's unauthorized negotiations with France in 1798, and was signed into law by President John Adams on January 30, 1799. The Act was amended in 1994, changing the penalty for violation from "fined $5,000" to "fined under this title"; this appears to be the only amendment to the Act.[2] Violation of the Logan Act is a felony, punishable with imprisonment for up to three years.
In August 2024, former President Donald Trump was reported to have contacted Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu urging him to reject any ceasefire deal, fearing a ceasefire would help Vice President Kamala Harris in the upcoming election.[21] This was reported by Judy Woodruff during a live broadcast by PBS during the Democratic National Convention. The next day, Woodruff issued a statement apologizing for the comments, saying, "I want to clarify my remarks on the PBS News special on Monday night about the ongoing cease fire talks in the Middle East. As I said, this was not based on my original reporting; I was referring to reports I had read, in Axios and Reuters, about former President Trump having spoken to the Israeli Prime Minister. In the live TV moment, I repeated the story because I hadn't seen later reporting that both sides denied it. This was a mistake and I apologize for it."[22] The Axios article carried by Reuters had stated that "One source told Axios Trump's call was intended to encourage Netanyahu to take the deal, but stressed he did not know if this is indeed what the former president told Netanyahu", with no mention of Trump urging him to reject any ceasefire deal.[23] This story was published on August 14, 2024, and the following day, Axios published a follow-up story stating that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office had released a statement saying that Netanyahu did not speak with former President Donald Trump to discuss the Gaza hostage and ceasefire deal.
A friend of mine just left her 3 month visit with her parents and brother in Beirut. They live in a largely Christian neighborhood that is expected to be less likely to be directly hit by Israel. However, for the last several months, the daily sonic booms have happened during the evening hours. Have you ever heard one? It rattles your sternum. It’s terrifying. And the Israelis have been terrorizing the population daily for about 2 hrs at a time.
The sound of Israeli drones is constant and has been going on for months as well. Not just in the targeted areas. She told me that it’s known that the drones buzz until they’re about to shoot. Then they go silent. How terrorizing would that be? And these drones are flying over a sovereign nation’s capitol!
To goddamn hell with anyone supporting Israel’s campaign of terror and extermination.
All games have rules. When Biden's policies violate US laws, a person who respects the law has to call them out on it. Otherwise, their difference with Trump is only one of degree, not kind.
I'm going to jump in here again and ask that every MAN in this comment section take a step back. It doesn't matter whether or not the candidate is female. What matters is that the majority of this country is female and across this country we're getting our rights stripped away, for the most part by men. I would respectfully ask you if you don't have any skin in the game keep your pie hole shut.
I also have three men to whom I gave birth all of whom respect women's rights. And will be voting accordingly.
Ahh. So we should all shut up and vote for Harris because she's a female. Check. Shall I also start sending contributions to Kari Lake, MTG, etc. ? I'll get on it right away!
Dave, this is not the place for this. I don't take it personally, but you are in interesting waters when you attempt to silence women on matters essential to their well-being. I take your comment for exactly that.
Yes that's very true. And there's a reason for it. The history of mansplaining doesn't need to be gotten into here, but just the fact that it exists means that the phenomenon of a man attempting to tell a woman what's good for her, whether it be staying at home or speaking in a quiet voice or keeping a pregnancy, is insidious.
Your defensiveness is a sign that I hit a nerve. And I'm not sorry if your consciousness gets raised but I'm also very experienced when it comes to men talking over me.
You misinterpreted my original post by dragging right wing figures into the conversation, then you began pointlessly doing...? IDK trying to get me to say something rude?
I'm saying to you there are times when men have no experience in the subject matter, hence try listening. Not talking.
She won't do anything different than Biden because she works for the same ruling class donors and her sole interest is the ascent to power. Her only ideology is cruelty and harsh judgment as evidenced not only be her history but the things she says on the campaign trail. The crowning moment of her campaign, which Islamaphobic liberals loved, was "I'm speaking." She is more of a warmongering maniac than Trump, publicly proving her allegiance to the American Imperialism's commitment to destroying the planet by proclaiming Iran as the primary enemy of the US. Our cancer capitalist system has created a two-headed monster, both right-wing and both pushing America towards World War III (if we are not already in it). https://barryjkaufmando.substack.com/p/kamala-harris-is-going-to-blow-up
Ana Kasparian has put it well: this is a showdown between DNC financiers and potential DNC voters, with the party lapdogs shaming and bullying the people that they should instead be courting.
Michael Moore, you're one of the smartest people I know of, and you have a true working-class heart. The hurt you are feeling is one I know very well; I experienced it when Sanders and AOC gave their tepid calls for "cease-fire" alongside affirmations of a settler state's "right" to exist (as if any state has a "right", let alone one that practices apartheid) and denunciations of faux-antisemitism. Harris never pretended to be really progressive-- her pitch is that she's not Trump. And to be fair, that is why you endorsed her so enthusiastically from the start. The truth is, I doubt that she'll be any better than Biden in this regard, and I think you do too.
This is going to be a turning point for people like us. I've been doing democratic-socialist/progressive-Democratic-Party politics for 30 years... as have you. (Except you're a brilliant film-maker and I'm just some guy.) I think the past year and this election campaign shows how bankrupt that effort is. We have to make a left turn. We just have to make sure we don't get killed by on-coming traffic-- but left we must go.
The US could have told Israel that the Gaza war has to be selective and precise without killing too many Gazans - possibly indicating a maximum number such as 5,000 or 10,000 civilian deaths. As soon as they crossed that line the US could have said future weapon sales are on hold and then stand by that decision. They didn't and that shows the Democrats are the party of war when you include the fact that the Ukraine war was triggeredy by decades of NATO encroaching on Russia's border by converting countries to be in NATO. The last straw was when Obama was president and Victoria Nuland was Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs, the US gave $5 billion, starting in 2013, to any Ukrainian group that was pro-NATO. Also, at that time, pro-nazi group violence occured including beating up and killing Russian speaking citizens of Ukraine in the eastern areas of the country (much of the eastern areas now occupied by Russia speak Russian as their native language). The number of deaths in the Ukraine war dwarf the Gazan war, possibly by a factor of 15 or 20. I'm a liberal democrat that was hoping RFK would be president but now supporting Trump now that RFK has joined with Trump and will pick some of Trump's cabinet positions.
Michael and everyone please. The point now is to get her in, not for her to be perfect on every issue. There are bigger issues at stake right now like do you want to live in a fascist country or not? People need to realize that not everything you want is going to happen right away before the election. She has shown she's a compassionate, caring person and willing to listen. Republicans, who don't agree with her on any issue are supporting her. For God sake focus on getting her in instead of tearing her down. We only have two weeks left.
Didn’t Bernie teach you anything? The “will of the people” has nothing to do with Washington politics. There, the will of the corporations, political PACs and party machines determine everything. And, as George Carlin said, “If voting mattered, they wouldn’t let us do it. The sad thing about Palestine (what’s left of it) is that nobody in power seems to care. If Trump wins, his pal Bibi will get unlimited US weaponry and permission to finish Palestine (and apparently Lebanon) off.
Michael enough already! Your heart is in the right place, but you cannot expect perfection from someone who doesn't even have the office yet. Stop looking for perfection on this one issue and let her grow on the job. As someone else said, use your influence to get people that might sit it out because of this issue to vote for her. Focus on the fact that she is the best candidate and human being we have had in a very long time. Just do everything you can to get her elected and stop harping on specific issues. You might be inadvertently helping Trump get in
I've said it before and I'll say it again, when I was a member of local Progressive synagogue we formed many committees based on the mandate to do good in the world, to heal the world. It's a Jewish obligation for crying out loud. So we had the Greening committee and the economic Justice committee and immigration, BIPOC, Ohlone Land concerns.
And the Middle East peace committee. Every month without fail we would meet, talk plan commiserate argue. Even travel to Israel was planned. But never ever did we fool ourselves that we were actually going to achieve peace. Our purview is to be present and informed. And to inform others.
The official position of the board of directors of the synagogue is not in support of jvp or any boycott of Israel. It doesn't keep us from joining these organizations, but again this is about listening, educating and putting your body out there in protest. Without fear. But also without timidity.
Folks, Rumpke is standing in front of us Stark Naked, in complete denial.
Michel , I litterally Called the White House ! Know it’s extremely difficult even for me cause I’m Scared blanklless as I hear Elon Musk is bribing Trump Voters with Those Large Lottery Size Cheks for a millon dollars while he’s not joining the rest of the Trumpies telling Horrible lies that actually are effecting People who are flood victims your point is importent but as I’ve told you a billon times she must Win

Yeah.... genocide is such an indelicate topic in polite company. Let's all avert our eyes the pretend it's not happening.
From the looks of things, Netanyahu will own Harris like he has owned Biden.
As he turns his sights to Iran, things could go nuclear in a hurry --- ALL on Biden's watch.
" Don't let the perfect be the enemy of the good". We need Kamala Harris as POTUS then we can deal with Netanyahu
How about nuclear war? You like nuclear war? (At that moment, will you say, "Well, at least we elected Kamala?") You need to understand how close we are coming.

Please read my post today. I have an effective way that we can all fight back against this evil.
Michael, Kamala Harris is not the POTUS. She is in no position to undermine President Joe Biden. This is a chess game, not checkers.
All games have rules. When Biden's policies violate US laws, a person who respects the law has to call them out on it. Otherwise, their difference with Trump is only one of degree, not kind.
I disagree. There are no rules in war.... and world leaders proceed accordingly.
You are claiming there is no such thing as war crimes. That would put you in the ranks of war criminals. Just so we know.
That @LisaLeonardi has stated a fact does not put her in the ranks of war criminals. Just so you know.
When Biden said he was a Zionist, he may have well said he was a Nazi.
The roots of Likud go right back to Mussolini's Black Shirts.
Just so you know.
The Jews are doing to Lebanon and do exactly what was done to them by Hitler.
Ok, whatever you say...
Exactly! Read my post today if you want to see proof of their treason as well.

Our cancer capitalist system has created a two-headed monster, both right-wing and both pushing America towards World War III (if we are not already in it). https://barryjkaufmando.substack.com/p/kamala-harris-is-going-to-blow-up
You are absolutely right. Read my post today if you want a way to focus your righteous anger.
Thanks Ted will do.
The Republican and Democratic parties are conspiring together against all of us. Please read my post today.
Lol
Israel's genocide of Palestine -- live streamed.
One Holocaust survivor refers to it as: "Auschwitz on TikTok."
I think some manner of "perfection" is called for when genocide is on the table.
Bibi, what a cute little baby name for one of the devil's minions.
You might be inadvertently helping Trump get in
It's not perfection, but compassion that I would like to see an inkling of.
At least Kamala is wearing clothes.
And Zionism is the new Nazism. "Operation Starvation and Extermination" proves it.
