It was an amazing, excellent speech. Such a contrast to the nonsense spewed by the Republicans. Jeffries will be a great leader in the House; perhaps either President or Vice President one day.

I needed this speech. A speech that inspired me to look up, realign and connect with humanity. Hakeem Jeffries, at that late hour after days of mind numbing (and soul crushing) fighting showed a purity of purpose and inspired energy that gave me hope. SPECTACULAR.

Hakeem Jeffries Is a class act who exhibits high integrity. I foresee great successes for him.

Veronica's avatar

HE'S the one who deserves to have the gavel.

Joanne's avatar

Yep! Only Kevin knew he could wait it out long enough. They didn’t want him - they just wanted to go home.

It wasn’t just the words and phrases and tenor of the speech that were superlative, brilliant, exquisite. It was his delivery, his performance, his connection with his audiences. It was so seamless, so conversationally yet dramatically expressive that I kept thinking he must have memorized it. Or was it completely extemporaneous? Whatever. It was truly a speech that earned a prominent spot in oratorical history.

Lizabelle's avatar

Totally agree. He made it look easy. On the contrary, his speech was complex thoughtful and daring.

Joseph Campo's avatar

It wasn't memorized, but the delivery was exquisite. That's what talented speakers can do for speeches. He and Buttigieg and Obama are the best the good guys have today.

Plus, Katie Porter. She doesn’t have their elegance, but by god, she’s razor sharp & shoots straight.

S B Lewis's avatar

Yes, Katie Porter... honest, able, the Mother of Virtue, California’s balance for the California Fraud, Speaker Kevin McCarthy, MAGA FRONT MAN, Trump surrogate...

Joseph Campo's avatar

Agree, she;s great. I wish she'd be considered for higher offices. I was suprised that she won re-election by a small margin, if I recall correctly.

Falicia Green's avatar

👏👏👏👏👏 I agree!!

Thanks for the full text. I appreciate Hakeem Jeffries and you too, Michael Moore. Democracy is surviving.

Hakeem Jeffries ... OMG! What an outstanding speech. Fills us all with hope. such a stark difference to the republican horde. I join him as well, in acknowledging Nancy Pelosi for her skill and talent managing a diverse Democratic party for these last 20 years navigating the rocky shoals during republican presidencies and helping to get everyone through the Pandemic and financials crisis. Looking forward to seeing Hakim step into those shoes. mary

I always said Nancy speaks for me. And now, beginning today, Hakeem speaks for me.

Falicia Green's avatar

What a joy and blessing to have sane politicians we can relate too!

Bless you, Michael Moore. Bless you. To quote my dear long dead famous good father, an orthodox Jew at birth confirmed when requested or required by Brooklyn Hassidim, as he rose to lead The New York Federation of Jewish Philanthropies, “Your voice in God’s Ear.”

Leader Jeffries spoke without hesitation and without notes. Never looking down... Hakim Jeffries knows his subject and he knows himself. And he knows Us, to quote Speaker Nancy’s Majority Whip, the great James Clyburn.

I heard Jeffries with tears of joy, hoping. The GOP was deaf.

Happy New Year, and thank goodness you are here. Keep speaking, keep going..

Well said, Sandy!! Beautiful quote from your father and it truly captures the inspired energy of his speech.

The man has a depth that will reveal itself. I now understand why he was chosen by his peers to lead.

What an amazing minority leader Jeffries will be.

However, we all

Know the next two years, and the insurrectionist republicans in power means chaos—a future shit show of investigations.

Ironically, it’s just those republicans in power who should be investigated for their attempts to overthrow our government by the people.

Sad & pathetic who is leading the “house.”

What a contrast in leadership between McCarthy and Jeffries

McCarthy has compromised away any moral fiber he possessed prior to his goal of being Speaker. He has sought this job for many years. In order to gain this job McCarthy has had to eviscerate his character publicly, culminating in disemboweling himself to win the 15th vote on January 6, 2023, by one vote.

Jeffries won the position of Minority Leader but the Democrats had that established well before any voting. Moreover, Jeffries won the hearts of the people.

McCarthy didn't win anything. Kevin McCarthy lost his soul and doesn't exist anymore.

Fay Reid's avatar

Kevin McCarthy has never had a moral fiber in his entire being. Any person who fled for his life from a maddening crowd, begged the president frantically, to call off his dogs. Admitted on TV that the trumpster instigated this vicious raid on OUR Capitol, then went crawling on his belly to beg forgiveness from his lord and master. And to kiss the backside of the trumpster, has long ago lost not only his moral compass, but any conscience he may have had.

Priscilla Payne's avatar

I do not think I have ever seen a person so desperate for an office and a title that he would so humiliate himself. He has given enormous power to those who never wanted him at all.

MaryPat's avatar

Humiliate AND give away all his and tge people's power. Disgustingly dangerous.

Joseph Campo's avatar

Here here. very well said. McCarthy deserves what he's gonna get over the next 2 years. Our nation deserves better, but this is what our flawed system delivers to us. Sad.

Kevin's avatar

But with McCarthy, the public will suffer. Both he and his party have laid out how they will act for the next two years. Let’s hope more people will wake up and see how disastrous this will be.

George Sell's avatar

Joseph, McCarthy promised three MAGA appointments to the Rules Cmte., which effectively controls what bills reach the floor. He promised Gaetz chairmanship of an Armed Services subcmte. Jordan has investigation power.

In questioning by CNN reporters, McCarty explained the MAGA takeover (coup?). In reference only to the Republican Conference, "I think by having the disruption now, really built the trust with one another and learned how to work together," he said to CNN's Manu Raju and Morgan Rimmer. "What we’re going to have to find in our mindset is that we have to frontload. We have to think about and work on the bills with a microcosm of the conference [MAGA] before we even start writing it. And that’s really what we learned here."

In other words, he will shape all bills to be MAGA bills even before presenting them to any members, guaranteeing acceptance and control of legislation by MAGA and Trump.

George Sell's avatar

If just one MAGA Representative doesn't like something, they can bring about a vote to expel McCarthy as Speaker.

Falicia Green's avatar

WOW George! I think you need to write speeches! That was beautiful!

Nancy Gray's avatar

I stayed up to watch the final vote (easier to do on the west coast). I am glad I stuck around to see what would happen next.

I was cheering Hakeem Jeffries throughout his entire speech. I LOVED it. I tried to listen to McCarthy but had to turn it off after a few minutes. Couldn't stomach it. Slimy, unctuous, condescending. Ugh.

Falicia Green's avatar

I hear you Nancy! Actually my husband begged me to turn the TV off when McCarthy started speaking.

JennSH from NC's avatar

I, too, thought of Barack Obama. As Congressman Jeffries was speaking, I felt proud to be a Democrat at this time. Southern Democrat doesn't mean what it used to, filled with hate and KKK members. Now that party is the Republican party that has the small hate-filled people who can't even get along with each other.

Gerry Heaney's avatar

Thank you to C-SPAN for the amazing live coverage also. Public Service Pulitzer deserved for showing the whole chamber

Linda McCaughey's avatar

Agreed. I was watching on CNN and could no longer stomach the endless, mindless "commentary"--so, I switched to C-Span and felt as though I'd left pre-school and entered university.

Lois Hickman's avatar

At truly inspirational speech, so needed and hopefully heeded by those who would demean our fragile democracy. Reminded me of the eloquence of Barak Obama, and gave me hope that he will continue to be a strong and influential figure in Washington.

Diane Otten's avatar

This is a proud moment for us, we who recognize what it means to be an American - different yet alike, we are inextricably intertwined. Thus, strong and unwavering.

PEB's avatar

Tis a pity that so many American voters allow idiots like Gaetz, Greene and George Santos to get to sit in the same room that so many Great Americans have blessed with their wisdom over the decades. But Democracy does allow idiots at the table along with the wise, because we all deserve to be heard. Should we allow idiots to make decisions for us? Well, yah, if we keep electing them. Duhhhh. Never vote for a Republican.

MONIKA LENZ's avatar

Jeffries spoke like a true leader. After he passed the gavel to McCarthy (my California district congressman) I went to bed.

Fay Reid's avatar

I'm sorry Monika. If we're lucky and people follow Michael Moore's suggestions, 2024 will put the craven Kevin to bed instead of you.
