This Sunday night, Donald Trump intends to recreate one of the ugliest nights in the history of New York City.
On February 20, 1939, right-wing American Christian Nationalists rented Madison Square Garden to hold a massive pro-Fascist, white supremacy rally. It was a sold-out crowd of 20,000 patriotic Americans, complete with flags, our National Anthem, and a 50-foot portrait of George Washington hanging from the rafters. World War II would start in 6 months, but the crowd ate up the racism, the attacks on the press and the hatred toward the Jews. Applause! Laughter! God Bless America!
The documentary filmmaker Marshall Curry made a 7-minute short film of that 1939 rally and called it “A Night at The Garden”. It was nominated in 2019 for an Academy Award.
Here it is:
Trump has wanted to hold his own fascist rally there three different times in the past few years. Now it’s going to happen at the end of a week where we learned how much Trump loved Hitler’s generals, how our generals who served under Trump believed him to be a “fascist to the core” — and even our soon-to-be new President insisting this week Trump is, indeed, a “fascist.”
Trump is the gift that keeps on giving as he actively tries to tank his own campaign. Yet the press would have us believe it’s still a “neck-and-neck race,” “a virtual tie,” “coming right down to the wire.” They keep saying this is a “50-50 country.”
Nothing could be further from the truth.
Too many of us have bought into this misreading of our nation’s political leanings. Which has led to many of you fearing the outcome of November 5th, weeks of anxiety, desperation and a sick pit in the stomach that we may be facing four more years of The Nutter. Here is the number one “subject heading” on the fan mail I’ve received in the past week:
Let me give you the three clearest clues as to why Trump is going down in big bowl of flaming Mexican hot sauce:
1. Trump is HOLDING A 1930s-STYLE FASCIST RALLY AT MADISON SQUARE GARDEN! Only an absolute loser would do such a thing.
2. Kansas. Kentucky. Montana. Ohio. Michigan. Vermont. California.
Every state that has held an abortion vote since the Supreme Court dismantled Roe v. Wade, has voted in favor of abortion rights — with the majority of them being red states! And with more to come in the next 10 days! Nebraska. Missouri. South Dakota. Florida. Plus Arizona, Nevada, Colorado, New York, and Maryland. What more do you need to know about the mood of the country? Also, the majority of America owns a uterus. And they vote at a higher rate than the gender that is missing that second “X” chromosome. The number of women — the tsunami of women — who are going to show up at the polls will be breathtaking — and for men to have their breath taken away… well, there’s a first for everything.
3. Every study shows that there has been a significant shift in the last decade in the political beliefs of the majority of Americans — brought about mainly by the 36 million Americans who have turned 18 since Trump descended down the Golden Escalator in 2015 (a whopping two-thirds of whom vote Democratic in each election) — and the loss of 23 million of our most conservative voting demographic, the elderly, in that same time period. This has led to the new majority of Americans who now take the “liberal” position on nearly all the major issues:

Cheer up everyone!
Just as long as we work hard on the election this week, and make sure we get as many people as we can to the polls, we are going to be more than just fine.
** In order to have a troll-free, hate-free comments section — and because if there’s one thing I know about my crazy haters, they would rather spend an eternity in hell with Marjorie Taylor Greene than send me $5 if forced to become a paid subscriber — my Comments section here on my Substack is limited to paid subscribers. But, not to worry — anyone can send me their comments, opinions and thoughts by writing to me at mike@michaelmoore.com. I read every one of them, though obviously I can’t respond to all. And every few weeks or so I share them publicly here on Substack and on my podcast so that your voice is heard by the multitudes in this wonderful community of readers and listeners. The solution here is not optimal but it has worked and my Comments section has become a great meeting place for people wanting to discuss the ideas and issues I raise here. There is debate and disagreement, but it is refreshing to have it done with respect and civility, unfettered by the stench of bigotry and Q-anon insanity.
Thank you. For your boost of hope and faith in American voters. For your historical knowledge and willingness to share it with all of us. I’m an educated and curious, reading, researcher and I didn’t know about that earlier white nationalist rally in the same spot. When I heard Trump was holding this event at MSG I felt sick that there could be enough people who think as he thinks, to fill that venue. Seeing a clip from a rally this week where Tucker Carlson screamed to ‘us all’ that it is time for “Daddy to come home” as he described a theoretical, insolent teenaged daughter who slams her door - needing “Daddy to come give her a spanking that would HURT HER way more than it hurt him” … and the MAGA crowd cheered.
And today I read the NYT saying Trump has the edge. Morning Joe saying utter dead heat. Trump isn’t even what breaks my soul - it’s what and WHOM he represents that breaks my soul. This country refuses - generation after generation - to take accountability for what ‘white Christian nationalists’ have done to enslave, destroy and eradicate land, animals, nature and other human beings. We cannot truly evolve until we take accountability.
Yesterday ‘Daddy’ said places like ‘The Congo’ were dumping their trash into the United States. Then repeated ‘America is a garbage can’ half dozen times.
And the crowd screamed in delight.
As my soul broke.
My saving grace last night was the Walz rally in North Carolina where I watched James Taylor and his family sing “Shower the People” to a much larger crowd and hearing us all - myself included - sing in unison, “Shower the people you love with love. Show them the way that you feel. Things are gonna be alright if you only will …”
Only two weekend left to GOTV.

Living in a swing state is terrifying, this makes me feel empowered. And brave! And like I want to be visible.
PUSSY HATS!!
I think it would be so timely to bring out the pussy hats so every uterus owning person can be a Cat Lady!
