Republicans wanted Americans to "Own their education" when they killed most support for students in the 80's by way lowering the amount Pell Grants would cover and made all of us pay and pay and pay. Graduate School was where my debt accumulated (GI Bill for undergrad) and I was 59 years old and teaching at a Community College (now retired after 20 years, thank you very much!) when I finished paying off my student debt. I wholeheartedly support the president's initiative. Just because I had to pay doesn't mean that I don't value the opportunity this affords young folks. And it will help out my son. We also need to support our institutions of higher education so student debt is not required to graduate. States, with the help of the federal government, should provide 100% of the tuition costs for students at all state supported colleges and universities. Until the high cost is addressed we are just kicking the can down the road...
After over twenty years of paying off my wife's student debt, we are ALMOST done paying it off. Are we mad that this happened now after years of paying thousands of dollars? Not one bit. It would have been great if this happened a decade ago. But we don't want our fellow Americans to go through this.
Thank you, once again, Michael Moore, for being the voice of reason and for making my day! You spoke about two situations which I am also very concerned about. As a kid, my friends and I enjoyed the summers so much and those days are some of my best memories. The sense of freedom and adventure and connecting with friends and learning how to enjoy leisure time were precious. We need those summers because it is likely that for the rest of our working lives, we will be fortunate to have two weeks vacation. As for college debt, it is important first to remember that college and continuing education is not a piece of cake. I know any number of people who finished college with high hopes of a decent career, only to find that they also had to work weekends and have second jobs to pay off their loans, for years. Whether having a real summer vacation or having a decent education, it has everything to do with the quality of our lives. And I do believe that the more quality of life people have, the better and more productive citizens they will be, and hopefully even more compassionate and benevolent!
It must have occurred to you: during the civil rights and anti-Vietnam war movements, the revolution was ragging on university campuses. Remember Ohio State. The ruling class thought we suffered an "excess of democracy." Rather than sending the National Guard with live ammunition, what better remedy than putting the students into debt peonage (a trick as old as humanity) for the rest of their lives, not eligible for bankruptcy, parents co-responsible! The evidence is clear: it worked.
As long as I am on most plausible truths to be utterly hidden from public view, here is another one. Universal health care: who wants to pay taxes to improve the health of Black People and other Minorities? Millions would be livid. How tragic! And sadly regrettable.
The war being waged on us is as old as time rich vs. Poor good vs. Evil because this society we live in is permeated with evil. Darkness crept in even before trump but we didn't see it. We are in trouble
Well, getting kids in debt in college starts from those credit cards with limited funds they pimp to kids from freshman year. Now every kid has a debit card. They don't feel or see the physical money leaving their hands. And most of them don't understand the deadly student loans until it's too late.
The great documentary THE LOTTERY OF BIRTH has a short segment about the Carter Admin studying why college kids so violently marched against the Vietnam War. The findings per this documentary was that the more someone is educated, the higher their expectations were for their life and so were unwilling to die in war. The conclusion of the study was to make it harder to get into college for the masses. Could this have all started right there in a democratic administration?
There is another thing going on. Back in the day it was almost all government that gave out cheap student loans at 3%. The loan stated it could not be covered by bankruptcy, meaning, you pay the government back or they will put a lien on your wages. Then in 2006 private loan companies were added who shot up the percentage rate over 15% . They gave loans to anyone and everyone. Those lenders knew, if the students could not pay, they could garnish their wages forever. ONCE those lenders got into the market place, cost of colleges started to skyrocket and the lenders loan amounts skyrocketed becoming impossible to pay off with their high interest rates and not being able to write if off in bankruptcy court. That is what has to change. Private lenders have to have a cap on interest. Student loans must be covered by bankruptcy laws, as is our right if things in life take a bad turn.
The interest is the absolute killer. All student loans should have all interest paid by the govt. Take that burden away, and I believe you'd get a much higher payoff rate by the borrower.
We need more nuns who drove us hard into loving of education -- knowledge is power. Unfortunately, they are aging out and none ( or "nones"-- those with no religion) have replaced them!! But it was on the backs of the nuns working for 'free' in the archdioceses that we were educated! Now what? Teachers need to be paid!!! Even nuns!! The Federal government needs to lead (and pay) on this to reinstate a love of (free) education instead of cheating (i.e.GOP) or dumbing down of everything that then leaves out critical thinking. I was taught; taught to analyze everything, even religion which, of course the white Christian nationalists are all dangerous fundamentalists who blindly believe in conspiracy theories!! This worries me so much. Yes, Mike, where is SMART anymore? We've gotten lazy, lax and stupid! Scary and dangerous!! When we are SMART we win all around--let's get SMART again!
Yes, teachers often do not understand the impact they can have with one bad or sustained bad comments to children. Their effects can last forever! My twin sister and I had one substitute nun in fourth grade that would slap kids in the face if they got the answer wrong. I was sitting a few rows on the other side of the room when she called on my sister. She hesitated and I remember seeing the nun raise her hand and at that moment my sister gave the correct answer so she put her hand down!! I was so devastated--I still remember! The nun was gone in less then a month. I am sure the parents of the kids that got slapped complained! But on the other side of the coin, I still remember my first grade nun who was so kind, loving and she had my middle name "Leah". I feel lucky that I was shown both sides which is critical thinking at its best- in action! Thank you for you comment on how teachers can turn students off to loving education and the desire and curiosity to learn, I am so sorry for your experience. But,--yes, we all have amazing gifts which teachers are today being trained to be sensitive to--thank Goddess and God!
Went to catholic hs. Had a gnarly imposing math teacher who called me dumb for a 76 I got on one test. Completely changed my direction away from math towards languages, where I had a wonderful compassionate supportive teacher. Don't regret languages, but regret not keeping up math because at that age, you are so impressionable.
I'm sorry for your experience. I understand how that felt.
Joseph, So sorry for your experience as well. Teachers really need to be taught that they cannot be so didactic in how they approach their students. Being in academia now, I can say that at least higher levels teachers are being taught more inclusive skills. A little TLC can go a long way. I bet all you needed was a little more guidance from that math instructor and you would have aced your next test!! I begin teaching next week and I will keep your experience close to my heart for my own awareness to put myself in the student's shoes--so-to-speak. Supportive teachers are wonders to behold. Often too rare! Glad you also had that experience.
Thanks for being a teacher and yr kind words. I did get like a 93 on the final and the priest teacher asked me to join the Sr year calculus class, but I told him no, just to spite him. Young kids don't think too far ahead. I shud have swallowed my pride and taken it. Instead I took some dumb remedial math just to fulfill the requirement and worked practically f/t at an ice cream store to make money for college. Oh well, live and learn.
How many bridges have I burnt? so many! I could be way further ahead if I had listened to elders and others instead of my own hard-headed drumbeat! I guess that's the balance we eventually learn! Humility goes a long way! My pride has hurt me so many times, but there are different kinds of pride. It can be a motivator to make sure you do your best and that's the good kind, the other is just plain hubris! And that can be deceitful--but takes great Wisdom/Sophia to recognize the difference. Small jobs often make great people! It adds to one's skill set!
Despite not having any kids or student loans, I'm so grateful to the Biden administration for providing some relief to someone, anyone, besides the wealthiest few. With a few more "real" Democrats in the Senate, it might even be possible to eliminate some of the fossil fuel subsidies, which would more than pay for this student loan forgiveness, while beginning to address some of the ways in which we are actively making the climate crisis worse by empowering the fossil fuel industry.
Sinema and hedge-fund lobbyists managed to save a few hedge-fund billionaires $14 billion a year via their "special" tax deduction -- for scale, that's the equivalent of forgiving $10,000 of debt for one and a half million former students each year -- and even the then-new President Obama was forced to bail out bank executives and the banker class. We can well afford to extend a helping hand to those carrying student debt.
I'm glad you are back!! I was worried about you! I'm so glad that Biden is helping people with their student loans. Sadly, my son said he won't gain anything from this bill because he has private loans that he pays $500 a month. He can't afford to buy a house in California even though he and his wife both have doctorates in their field of study. It's very sad. I think he has a year more to pay. He's making huge payments so he can get rid of it fast.
You have to accelerate and pay as much as possible as soon as possible. Wife had 40k in loans. Luckily we had the ability to accelerate because the interest was killing us. 7pct. jezus.
Thanks MIchael - I too remember lazy days of summer vacation. I loved school and couldn't wait to get back to it in September. My mother was also at home for a major part of my education. I was a working Mom and summers were a challenge when my children were young. So for some, getting children back in school is a relief.
As for forgiving school loan debt.....I recently learned of the "curb-cut effect", which allowed access for handicapped people and yet, benefited everyone. It was the idea that helping the "least" among us does benefit everyone. I see that forgiving this debt does the same. I also believe that Jesus made a similar statement.
Just came off listening to Democray Now's excellent program on student debt, so after hearing the stories of Balck women who owe $250 for getting educated (first in their families and wanting to break the peverty cycle) i couldn't share your excitement about $10 -20,000 off. Also you nailed it when you said why we son't have free higher education like we used to and like many countries do - people would be able to critically think ...BINGO! .... the big money donors to the right wing want sheep, not thinkers. Our country is in big trouble! My hope is for the mid-terms and more progressive wins!
I wholeheartedly agree no school until after Labor Day! Here in Sacramento my grandkids have already been in school for two weeks in 95-105 degree temps. Afternoon recess? Afternoon PE class? They are exhausted little fried kiddos when I pick them up🥵.
This is about the recent podcast about Mike’s visit to Maralago. Mike thought people there were taking selfies with him because his reputation of being a provocateur was over. Not at all. It has been my observation that when recognizable people and/or politicians want to sidle up to potential controversy they will seek a defense. The one true defense against any exposure by Moore would be able to brag that their selfie proves they are friends with him and all is forgiven over a political moment by Moore. The Republicans of today are also populists and a picture with Moore might be the most popular picture that will win votes. I should do an essay on my blog regarding how Moore has changed the country for better. Normally, documentaries would ruin a political figure for the truth telling. Michael Moore does not have the importance of his work in creating change because of Dark Money and the Roberts’ Court. “Sicko” was profoundly successful in creating change in the USA.
I can think of a couple of ways to eliminate the problem of student debt without government intervention. For one thing, colleges and universities should find a way to cut costs. Why does every campus have to have a football team? Why do they need a band? Students should only have to pay for what they need.
How about the private sector stepping up? More scholarships! America has more private foundations than any other country in the world. Much of that money sits idle while taxpayers are making up the difference to subsidize student loans. Ridiculous! If employers want good and happy workers, they need to step up and pay to educate them. Problem solved!
I know that not every college has a football team. The athletic director needs to figure out how it can work. Of course, in many big schools, the revenue brought in by football teams pays for so many other things (think Alabama, OSU, Michigan etc). So I'm not sure your analogy is accurate. But I get the point - that spending should be equivalent to how much they can afford. Like non-profits.
First, the diesel industry. As reported in 2005 state legislatures have regulated the hell out of the diesel industry. There are 45 blends of diesel fuel required to meet the nation’s needs. Diesel blends need to be reduced to one to stream line production to lower fuel costs.
Secondly, the United States is running the lowest stockpiles, 20+ days. This is creating prices hikes. This is man made because diesel and gasoline are naturally occurring ratio in a barrel of sweet crude at 10 to 20 gallons respectively. The industry has cranked down fuel refining to inflate prices. Congress should move with God’s speed to set national stockpile quotas to avoid potential price gauge tactics. If we raise diesel production the surplus of gasoline would lower the price. Military purchasing and lower pricing should alleviate surplus in gasoline.
Third. Federal government and state legislators should lower all taxes on fuel for the trucking and agricultural. Supply line and production costs will be lowered to combat inflation. I would recommend 50%. We still have to maintain the roads. This tax break also protects the billions in farm subsidies that Americans do not seem to be seeing in current food pricing. We have to pass fair and balanced Corp taxes to balance.
Fourth. The Diesel Fuel Bottleneck is approaching as we move to electric cars nation wide. To protect President Biden electric car initiative we have to transition truckers and farmers to a stable fuel supply not link to gasoline production. I would recommend compressed natural gas, CNG. The cost is significantly lower and is completely independent from any other fuel production.
Finally. Solar for All. Pay as we go approach. We establish a low base usage fee to add to each electric bill. The fee increases as usage increases. Those fees are saved for the construction of concentrated solar arrays. Each state runs their own program. We continue to build these as funds are raised. As each array comes online everyone’s electric bill goes lower. This is road map to low cost energy bills. Bills that have no fuel costs associated. At some point our electric bills are like HOA fees for maintenance of the system. 100 percent Solar and electric cars.
How to make college affordable for working Americans.
1. Create pre-tax savings accounts for families to make payments to a college fund which can be started at birth of child. If we can do it medical accounts for tampons we can do it American children.
2. Three to five years prior to college enrollment, tuition costs are locked in for the student for four years.
Now let’s get crazy and make this better!
3. Instead of just being a savings account let’s take the money and do a pre purchase of a savings bond. 20k becomes 40k for American families. The plan sets up 20 yr monthly payments, which are small and paid. This helps cover tuition, board, and meal plans.
I can hear the nay sayers, it will bankrupt the country. No, a person that goes to college earns a minimum of $15k a year more. 1/3 or 5k will be paid in taxes every year for around 45 years. It is a great invest in the country.
