Mike—just a thought: Would you consider a post in this series specifically for elderly or disabled folks like me whose enthusiasm is unbounded but whose mobility (and some days). energy, and (every day) funds—are limited?? I am already donating small amounts and writing and speaking out in every online or physical venue I happen to be; in past campaigns, I have written postcards or letters to help; and I found today’s post energizing. It immediately occurred to me that, having made a yard sign, I can ask someone else to put it up for me! Small detail but far better than thinking I can’t put up a yard sign. I am sure you get what I am saying. And thanks for all you do.

One last comment: we must begin NOW to o prepare to counter the more than 70 election denying official in swing states who will refuse to certify the election. We need a plan, and if it involves legal action, we need a way to counter the MAGA judicial folks, too. The Project 2025 folks are way too confident. Believe them when they say they have “improved” their game; be ready!

Hey Mike, I’ve been in the Peace group for many years. Every Saturday. We occupy the town Square for one hour and then the last few months we’ve been calling for a cease-fire and Gaza. one of our banner says defend democracy.

We are Peace group and wall. My vote will be for Kamala. I need her to come out for peace peace peace.

I want to hear Kamala Harris say publicly that she will do her best to get us single-payer universal healthcare and I will work my butt off following your plan. I have been fooled more than once and I'm having a problem with trusting we will ever all have the right to healthcare.

I am a foreigner and do not reside in your country, but as an outsider looking in (and considering there are so so so many issues worth getting off your collective arses for, including healthcare) I think it’s worth keeping your expectations real.

Your country is fucked at the moment, and has been for a long time.

The cancer of tRump and the crew that built him have been running most of the show and setting up most of the intertwined systems that perpetuate them forever.

Considering how hyperlitigious the USA is, pulling apart the hold the drug companies have, the insurance firms, the investment houses and making a healthcare system work in one term?! May as well be demanding Dorito Don be honest and sincere 🤣

There is a book by Thom Hartmann, "The Hidden History of American Healthcare: Why Sickness Bankrupts You and Makes Others Insanely Rich," that describes the system, its problems, and how it can be converted to Bernie Sanders's single-payer plan in four years. This issue has been in my wheelhouse since I was a nursing student 50 years ago, and I realized that people get no care or inadequate care depending upon their ability to pay. Healthcare is a human right and should be recognized and treated in the US as in other developed countries. Hartmann's audiobook is less than ten dollars and is concise. Educating yourself about this most critical issue takes less than four hours of listening.

I’m an Aussie… we have healthcare. I agree that the state of the USA’s healthcare is abhorrent.

All I am saying is I would be seriously shocked if any new president could sort it in a single term when you take into consideration all of the other crises your country is facing… let alone cleaning up whatever shitfight comes from sooky Don.

In the broader picture I guess I’m just trying to warn Americans to be realistic in your expectations. I would hate for a situation to arise in another four years where everybody is whinging and crying about Kamala didn’t deliver this, Kamala didn’t deliver that. Which she will cop as per all Presidents, but let’s be blunt and honest - there are many within your country who will be even more critical of her, far beyond anything valid or justified. Why? Simply listen to tRumplestiltskin’s posse and the bs they already spread.

Definitely keep pushing for your goal though 👍

It's not one issue when it is likely that more people die every year due to our for profit healthcare system in one year than our soldiers died in the entire Vietnam War. We waste enormous amounts of money and cause our industries to be less competitive. It should be a front and center issue once and for all. It's also an election winning issue as we have seen before.

Gloria, I suppose the bigger question you should pose to yourself is how likely is it that TRUMP and the 2025 Plan will support a universal single payer plan? What odds do we have in convincing them that privatizing the hell out of all forms of healthcare and sucking the life out of Americans who become ill would fall on other than deaf ears?

I hope Harris wins, but she must do it without my vote or support if she can't back Medicare for All. Medicare, which only pays 80% and one in four Americans uninsured, is a disgrace in the eyes of the developed world. Harris should at least explain why she abandoned Sander's plan and have something better to propose.

The Democrats have been stringing us along for too many years while millions of people had their lives cut short because some wealthy money hoarders will never have enough. I won't budge andy conscience will be clear.

Roy's avatar

Hi Gloria. In my opinion, you are right and you are wrong.

I think you are right to stand firm to your beliefs and demands. You are right that both parties have made promises during campaigns and then -- for whatever reasons -- failed to follow through.

The fact is that we have a very imperfect democracy, with a disappointing election system. I am usually more disappointed with the Democrats than the Republicans because I expect so little from the Republicans.

I am 68 years old. I am a progressive liberal and prefer to vote for candidates who seem to embody what I think and believe. I seldom have that option. More often than not, I am left with choosing to vote for the candidate I dislike the least. In the 2000 Presidential election I chose to vote for the Green Party candidate, Ralph Nader, because he embodied what I wanted. At that time, I lived in Seattle and my vote did not impact the results. If I had been living in Florida at that time, my vote for Nader would weigh on me much more because of how the election that year played out. That woke me up to the reality that every vote really does matter.

Gloria, I think you are mistaken to "hope Harris wins" and not vote for Harris. There are only two viable choices and one of them will be our next President. It seems clear to me that you know Trump is not the better choice. To "hope" your least-disliked candidate wins while withholding your vote if they do not say exactly what you want to hear them say is to me like denying what you know are the clear differences between the two candidates.

There are policy issues with Biden and with Harris where I disagree with them and am even furious with them. But for the next 3 months I want Harris to say whatever will convince enough people to vote for her -- especially in swing states -- to propel her to victory, because I know the other candidate, if they won, would set all the causes I believe in back to such a degree that the country and the world might never recover.

I am often sobered by the perspective that the change I seek may not occur the way I want or as soon as I want. That does not mean I give up on what I want. It does mean, to me, that any little way each choice I make can move things closer to what I want, or further from what I do not want, is a victory. In this election, for me, that choice is voting for Harris.

One other thing that I think about every election. Thousands of people fought extremely hard, and many of them died, so that I have the right to vote; to elect who represents me. All that spilled blood propels me to always vote, even if I have to hold my nose and vote for my least-disliked candidate. Please find it in yourself to vote for the candidate who comes closest to what you want. Thank you.

Not voting is the same as abstaining.

It is still a vote.

It is a vote that will land Trump back in the oval office.

By not voting, you will not be innocent, you'll just be complicit in Trumps Dictatorship and therefore complicit in all of his subsequent crimes.

Sorry but you are still on the hook whether you want to be or not.

Your decision, regardless of what it is, will affect the future of America, the Free World and Planet Earth.

Ksandra;I just saw a Harris attack add in Wisconsin with an RN blaming Harris for obvious problems with our broken healthcare system because she's responsible for allowing immigrants to overburden the system. Why doesn't Kamala announce she will support Bernie's single-payer Medicare for All plan because our current for-profit system sucks money away that should be spent for care and results in fragmented, inefficient, lower quality care than other developed with the single-payer system that covers all their citizens. It's not the immigrants, it's the profits.

Mike, I have long held that the actual population of MAGA/Republicans is around 30% of the electorate. They are capable of pushing that to 37% in specific races by bringing along sympathetic “Independents.”

How do they win? DISENFRANCHISEMENT - by scrubbing voter roles and gerrymandering in local and congressional races. A lot of their wins come as a result of pure propoganda and gaslighting.

I live in a district that is 2 to 1 in favor of Republicans, BUT with a large turn out of Independents and Democrats that sit out local elections we in fact can win.

It’s like this; if YOU DO NOT VOTE you lose your right to express dissatisfaction, because for the record you are stating I don’t care.

No matter what you feel the odds are winning by landslide or losing big time, you can only create change by voting.

Yes, it is...I have been studying it since Oct 8...and, it is the worst evil situation ever....but, Harris can NOT denounce Israel. The Jewish Donor Lobby is thick into control of the US political system.....They would go full bore against her and support Trump...they may anyway because he's a complete pussy for Israel...not that Biden hasn't been a pushover.

Harris will have to tread lightly....She may chose Shapiro as VP, not just because of the reasons they give but because he's Jewish. THAT could make Jews who would have voted for sucker Trump change to her because then this would be the 1st Jew on the Presidential ticket...a Jew 1st in place for the Presidency.

This issue is extremely painful for many of us. And I hope readers will appreciate that you have specified the "Jewish Donor Lobby"...i.e., not the Jewish people, so many of whom have actively opposed the actions of the Israeli government. Having said that, personally I sincerely hope that Harris does not choose Shapiro. His criticism of those protesting Israeli actions in Gaza have been ignorant and as abhorrent as antisemitism itself. However, Harris' husband's public fight against antisemitism, which is admirable, has also been influenced by the conflict. I believe he has been bit too quick to see expressions of opposition to the Israeli government as hostility against Jewish people. Should Shapiro be her running mate, I will find myself once again, voting for the "lesser of the evils".

Sorry Michael, not the sort of energy you're looking for.

Judith Dyer's avatar

I considered including the nutty Christians who contribute to that Donor Lobby but it would more information necessary in order to make my point. What has been happening to the people of Palestine is a huge black mark on Israel AND the human race. It's been going on since before 1948; it's a testament to the "value"of worshipping these imaginary gods. Israel is absolutely causing antisemitism. I hope they're happy with that. It's tragic that a high percent of Jews in the USA, which was a real promised land for them, support Israel. I think they are confused. Jews and others who were previously servants came to a virgin country and were able to use their talents mostly unimpeded by prejudice.

Very cool, Mike. This enthusiasm and positivity will burn off the pall of gloom that Trump spreads wherever he goes. But don’t go for the naive “They go low, we go high’. Trump fully intends to steal this election. MAGA has inserted itself into county election boards in all the swing states. They intend to sow chaos in the certification process and force the courts to make them certify their counties. By the time it gets to electoral college vote, there will be grounds to challenge each state. It’s quite possible that neither candidate will have the requisite 270 votes. At that time, Kamala Harris will have no choice but to have the Congress vote, 1 vote per state. Remember that MAGA practiced this Jan6, 2022. Now that they’ve worked out the bugs, they know how to get it right. Our vote isn’t going to be enough. How do we protect ourselves from this?

Being told your vote is wasted and you must vote for the lesser of two evils is why we are here. I bought into that for decades, I worked for the Kerry and Obama campaigns but when nothing much changed and he US continued to get into war after war and all sorts of dirty things in other countries basically to steal their resources I finally said enough is enough. Kamala has used the tired line that Israel has a right to defend itself. I see no indication yet that she will not continue funding genocide. I feel pissed off when people tell me how I should vote. I don’t tell people that if you vote for the duopoly you are voting for genocide. You do you, I will vote my conscious.

You're right of course...you must vote your conscience. No one can make you do otherwise. But others are sharing what it is that they believe.
