On Thursday, the country’s second largest pharmacy chain, Walgreens, caved in to threats from the extremist anti-abortion/Forced Birth movement and declared they will not dispense the legal, FDA-approved abortion pill Mifepristone in 21 states where Republican state attorneys general have promised to shut them down if they do so.
I have. My company had a national sales meeting in Women-Hating-Tennessee and usually I spend extra time in the cities of these conventions. Not this time- I wouldn’t spend any of my own money where I’m not considered an equal human being.
After the Jan 6th coup attempt, Walgreens joined with other companies saying they would no longer make campaign contributions to any members of Congress who were election deniers. Within 10 months, they had already given money to 11 members who had supported overturning the 2020 election. Like most of the 1%, they never really stop lying.
My wife and I live in Michigan where this doesn't apply but Walgreens is wrong to cave in to these Ultra MAGA Republicans on the issue of women's health choices and decisions. We don't use Walgreen, or any drug stores like Walgreens, as I am retired military and use the military drug program through EScripts. We will keep following your e-mails about other places that have pharmacies like Costco and Meijer. We don't shop at WalMart because we don't like their political stands. Thanks Mike.
Thanks Michael. I just subscribed and I’m quite happy to do so. I’m a major fan of your work. I’ll be moving my Rx’s out of Walgreens here in Flori-duh.
Michael - Please make a 60-second YouTube video that outlines this situation, and calls for the Walgreens boycott.
Forwarding your emails is fine for the older folks, but younger folks like video, and can forward links of your video to their friends. Maybe your video will even go viral.
Hey, SeaMark: Us "older folks" like videos, too! Please don't pidgeon-hole us all into the same "older folks" coop...it can be dangerous and in doing so you are parroting PR and marketing propaganda! I'm 67 and one of my favorite songs is by Eminem. So, please...just stop! Thanks for your consideration in treating every one of us as equals, regardless of age.
Thank you for your response. I support your suggestion that Michael create a video of this topic for his YouTube channel...maybe he plans to for his YouTube channel.
What I objected to was the implication that "older folks" don't utilize videos as educational tools. You can point out the benefits of videos without referring to "older folks" as if we're stuck in the past, which is what I read in your words. And before you presume I have thin skin about my age, I don't...I am just fed up with ageism all along the age spectrum. I object when many in my age group disparage the youth of today as being lazy and entitled. I object when people younger than me disparage baby boomers as being the cause of their not being able to achieve what our parents and we were able to financially achieve in our lives. Each individual in any particular group is not the same as the next person in that group and "grouping" people in that manner only feeds the ageism promoted by PR and marketing, imo.
I don't think he was disrespecting us... just acknowledging that we elders (I'm 74) do actually read and use emails. Younger folks don't email (although they do text!) and they enjoy videos... I prefervideos on a large screen, not on a little phone.
I've seen some real agist comments on line, but this isn't one of them. SeaMark wasn't being mean or offensive. He was trying to be inclusive, and made a simple observation. It's okay.
But I will say, It's definitely hard to be old if you're not living in Asia. (where they revere the elderly... not so here in 'murica)
Let's not boycott them, let's abort Walgreens. I'm aborting Walgreens in California. They need to feel the pain they cause elsewhere. FYI, Walgreens also has a mail order pharmacy which some health plans may require - let your health plan know we all need a complete pharmacy, not a partially aborted pharmacy.
When Roe fell last summer, I posted a warning to my ovulating friends and family to stock up on Plan B. Sometimes I hate being right. I’ve already moved my Rx’s from Walgreen’s and when I did so, my Pharmacist completely understood why. She mentioned this is happening a lot.
I play in the pit for the San Diego Opera. Several weeks ago we played Suor Angelica, by Puccini, about a woman who had an "illegitimate" child and was forced to give him up and become a nun. Her aunt visits and demands that she sign over her inheritance to her younger sister who is getting married, and oh, by the way, the child died two years ago. Sister Angelica is heart-broken and decides to poison herself. But, after taking the poison, realizes she can no longer go to heaven to see her boy. She cries out to the Virgin Mary, who grants her request. In the last several lines of music you hear her sighs of oncoming death, the music grabs at your heart, and she sees her son running towards her, welcoming her into heaven.
Puccini wrote political operas. This one was for women's bodily autonomy. La Boheme: Medicare for All. Tosca: defund the police. But they all have this in common: they are heart-breaking tragedies. Why must we live in a country that accepts human tragedy as just something that happens daily, no big deal?
A wonderful piece of music. I can’t get through Traviata without a good supply of tissues. Death to a woman who enjoys the pleasures of the flesh. Butterfly..a woman who kills herself because she is deserted. Tragedy indeed.
Madama Butterfly--anti-colonialist. Losing her son to a man who threw her away to marry another woman, a rich woman. An American woman. The conquered country as supplier of resources, including women and sex. I just can't get over that this is still occuring. In high school, learning about World War Two and thinking, in the late 1960s, that we were so much more civilized. How could I have thought that? Anyway, is it just being human that we behave this way?
I live in San Diego and love opera, but couldn’t stomach that one and didn’t attend for many reasons. Thanks for posting this. Going forward, it will be nice to know there is a kindred spirit in the pit.
Sweet! I'll be in the pit for Tosca. Except for the trombones and trumpets blasting in my ears, it'll be glorious. I'm the cellist with the frizzy, grey hair. Say hello?
Infuriating! And the letter is signed by Kris Kobach, vote suppression fanatic.
Last night I saw the excellent film A Force More Powerful, in which the Nashville 1960 boycotts of Woolworth and the whole downtown shopping district were very effective in pushing the Mayor to support desegregation. Similar successes in South Africa in 1985-7 and India in the 1930s.
Spread the word about Walgreens! I'm going to write to the same executive Kobach's letter is addressed to.
If you need another reason to boycott Walgreens, how about the fact that they still sell cigarettes? A few years ago I switched to CVS for that reason. Shame on you Walgreens.
The time has come to use the power of the purse. Why not boycott leisure travel in all these states until they reverse this demonstration of misogyny?
I have. My company had a national sales meeting in Women-Hating-Tennessee and usually I spend extra time in the cities of these conventions. Not this time- I wouldn’t spend any of my own money where I’m not considered an equal human being.
Done! I’m boycotting Florida too and hoping Disney moves their operations.
Walgreens could just change their store name to “Bigots R Us”...
I just read the Walgreens mission statement, what a bunch of hogwash! And this company is led by a woman.

Walgreens, every inch as honest as Fox "news"
Judd's great. I recommend Popular Info and the Intercept. Both excellent.
Great minds, neighbor! (I'm in NM)

I live in California. I will not go there for anything anymore. Nada. Zip. Zilch.
Thanks Michael. I just subscribed and I’m quite happy to do so. I’m a major fan of your work. I’ll be moving my Rx’s out of Walgreens here in Flori-duh.

Hi Sandra - I'm older than you, and worked on my first political campaign in 1964.
And I work in education.
These days, everybody (esp. young people), often don't take the time to learn about topics in depth, or have the time for context and nuance.
There is a reason why YouTube videos have 10's of millions of views, and have so much influence on current events and thinking.
Lincoln Project has made good use of short videos.
Michael can too.
;-)

Stocking up is smart. I also told my daughter and her friends to do the same.
Good to hear!!

Civilization is a very thin veneer that chips easily.

I forgot to say, I LOVE the cello. My husband plays the trombone. I am not into brass. I take out my hearing aids... LOL
I will!!
And every Walgreens, that eventually goes out of business, should be turned into a Planned Parenthood .

Strategic nonviolent action film A Force More Powerful: https://youtu.be/O4dDVeAU3u4
Forced Birth Fascism should be illegal.

They probably figure they’ll make money on inhalers for the COPD patients.
I hope CVS dispenses the medication. I could move my blood pressure medication prescription from my supermarket to Target.
I don't patronize Walgreens and now I have a substantial reason for not patronizing Walgreens!
Thank GOD for you, Michael Moore!
