OK. I get it. Sort of. Though until the system allows for a viable third party, a vote for Stein like in 2016 or a vote for Nader like in 2000 can have serious unintended consequences. I don't think we can take anything for granted this time around.

Hillary lost in 2016 because she didn't go into the states that would have given her the electoral vote....she won the popular vote....but against the wishes of her campaign she refused to go into those states that might have given her the electoral vote........Hillary lost by her own sorry self........"Trump won the presidency by clinching 304 electoral votes, well over the minimum 270 needed. There are 2 million 'Palestinians' in Gaza. There are another 2 million or so Israeli Arabs. They are 20% of the Israeli population. and no one is harming them except maybe Hamas or Hizbullah. Being Arab gives you no immunity to Islamist weapons. And back to Gaza; do you know what percentage 40,000 out of 2 million is. TWO. The ignorance out of which some people yap about this is nothing short of abysmal!

Expand full comment

So comforted by your perspective. Of course actually the 40,000 number you cite are the direct deaths caused by bombs. The number of deaths due to the utter destruction of everything in Gaza is believed to be over 160,000. Shucks that's 8%. A pittance. (That would be like 30 million Americans, or ten thousand 911 attacks. We went to war for 20 years over just one 911 attack. Since you like precise numbers and percentages so much, I guess Palestinians will have to make war against Israelis and their supporters for two hundred thousand years.)

Altercation: AIPAC Goes Full Trump

It endorses most of the GOP representatives who voted to overturn the Electoral College results—but not pro-Israel hawk Liz Cheney.

by Eric Alterman

April 29, 2022

Expand

Altercation 042922.jpg

Evan Vucci/AP Photo

Then–Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump speaks at the 2016 AIPAC Policy Conference at the Verizon Center, March 21, 2016, in Washington.

AIPAC has been in the news lately, and not in a good way. After decades of pretending that it would not know a political contribution if it bumped into one and broke its nose, it ended the charade and announced in December 2021 that it would be creating a super PAC to donate directly to congressional candidates. Having raised nearly $16 million in its first quarter of existence, it has now endorsed 109 of the 147 Republican congressmen who supported Donald Trump’s campaign to try to overturn the Electoral College’s results on January 6th, along with a few Democrats. “Our goal is to make America’s friendship with Israel so robust, so certain, so broadly based, and so dependable that even the deep divisions of American politics can never imperil that relationship and the ability of the Jewish state to defend itself,” it explains.

In a Boston Globe op-ed by Alan Solomont and Nancy Buck (both associated with J Street), however, we learn that “AIPAC’s new endorsees include such allies of Donald Trump as Representative Jim Jordan of Ohio, who refuses to cooperate with the Select Committee to Investigate the January 6th Attack on the US Capitol; Representative Pete Sessions of Texas, who met with ‘Stop the Steal’ leaders just days before the insurrection; and Representative Scott Perry of Pennsylvania, who has echoed white nationalist conspiracies about ‘replacement theory’ and compared Democratic leaders to the Nazis.”

Read more Altercation

And guess which Republican AIPAC apparently forgot to include? That’s right. The rather crazily “pro-Israel” Liz Cheney is being blackballed. In the past, Cheney has taken the AIPAC line down the line. Even before she was in Congress, she represented the Republican Party at an AIPAC Policy Conference panel and (falsely) complained of Obama: “There is no president who has done more to delegitimize and destabilize the State of Israel in recent history than President Obama.” She also attacked Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib, in a manner consistent with AIPAC’s attacks on them. But now, apparently because she’s become persona non grata with the people out to destroy American democracy, she’s getting stiffed.

"The United States did go to war with Iraq soon enough. The Bush administration was eager to mobilize the anguish of the 9/11 attack to support the war. Despite the intelligence community’s unequivocal conclusion that Iraq had nothing to do with either 9/11 or al-Qaida, the administration let Americans believe the contrary. Consequently, the United States went to war in Iraq on a false pretense that it was somehow avenging those killed by al-Qaida. A Washington Post poll conducted two years after 9/11 dramatically illustrated the story: 69% of Americans at the time believed Saddam Hussein was “personally” involved in the 9/11 attack. Even more staggering, 82% believed Saddam provided assistance to Osama bin Laden. Both were utterly false." https://www.brookings.edu/articles/9-11-and-iraq-the-making-of-a-tragedy/

But if we are to have an alliance with Israel, it must be a responsible one and one that supports common values--notably internationally agreed rules of governing. Any alliance we have must build a better more secure world. It is no good for the USA to become a moral contortion artist and mindless cheerleader in a relationship with any other nation on Earth. It's up to the US to establish clear boundaries in any tactical relationship--boundaries that support human rights for all people and cooperative peace for all nations.

I want mine back too. The problem was laid out by Thomas Friedman (not my favorite journalist) in yesterday’s NYT, wherein he expose Bibi’s plan to sabotage our election with the goal of getting his buddy Trump back in. Then, like Trump, he will be able to hang on to power forever. He’s a Middle Eastern Machiavelli who deals only in bad faith. He hasn’t the slightest intention of permitting a cease-fire except on the most egregious conditions and certainly not until our election takes place. He’ll easily weather out a few more days or even weeks of the current protests. Should Harris prevail, I believe his days will be numbered because she sees right through him and won’t let him continue to get away with the free ride he’s had with Biden. But his plan, perceptively analyzed by Friedman, has the potential for wreaking havoc in the election. I pray that it will fail and that Harris will ultimately hold him fully accountable for his nefarious policies.

I will give you the point that Netanyahu may not be the right person for the job on the Israel side, but I am not sure that a different person changes this equation AT ALL.... we must wake up and look at who is on the other side, and it is not pretty. They don't care for the women and children you all seem so concerned about. They steal all the aid for themselves and use it to build a terror tunnel network larger than the London Tube, and then use it for their own protection while purposely leaving their women and children out in harms way. Remember Yitzhak Rabin?

(/rəˈbiːn/;[1] Hebrew: יִצְחָק רַבִּין, IPA: [jitsˈχak ʁaˈbin] ⓘ; 1 March 1922 – 4 November 1995) was an Israeli politician, statesman and general. He was the fifth prime minister of Israel, serving two terms in office, 1974–1977, and from 1992 until his assassination in 1995.

Rabin was born in Jerusalem to Jewish immigrants from Eastern Europe and was raised in a Labor Zionist household. He learned agriculture in school and excelled as a student. He led a 27-year career as a soldier and ultimately attained the rank of Rav Aluf, the most senior rank in the Israeli Defense Force (often translated as lieutenant general). As a teenager he joined the Palmach, the commando force of the Yishuv. He eventually rose through its ranks to become its chief of operations during the 1948 Arab–Israeli War. He joined the newly formed Israel Defense Forces in late 1948 and continued to rise as a promising officer. He helped shape the training doctrine of the IDF in the early 1950s, and led the IDF's Operations Directorate from 1959 to 1963. He was appointed chief of the general staff in 1964 and oversaw Israel's victory in the 1967 Six-Day War.

Rabin served as Israel's ambassador to the United States from 1968 to 1973, during a period of deepening U.S.–Israel ties. He was appointed Prime Minister of Israel in 1974 after the resignation of Golda Meir. In his first term, Rabin signed the Sinai Interim Agreement and ordered the Entebbe raid. He resigned in 1977 in the wake of a financial scandal. Rabin was Israel's minister of defense for much of the 1980s, including during the outbreak of the First Intifada.

In 1992, Rabin was re-elected as prime minister on a platform embracing the Israeli–Palestinian peace process. He signed several historic agreements with the Palestinian leadership as part of the Oslo Accords. In 1994, Rabin won the Nobel Peace Prize together with long-time political rival Shimon Peres and Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat. Rabin also signed a peace treaty with Jordan in 1994. In November 1995, he was assassinated by Yigal Amir, an extremist who opposed the terms of the Oslo Accords. Amir was convicted of Rabin's murder and sentenced to life imprisonment. Rabin was the first native-born prime minister of Israel, the only prime minister to be assassinated, and the second to die in office after Levi Eshkol. Rabin has become a symbol of the Israeli–Palestinian peace process.

The problem with your rational is, that Palestinians have been under occupation for 75 years......Many people around world SEE that Palestinians in Gaza live in open air prison.... Palestinians now live in the zone of death, destruction, of everything ~housing gone, medical care gone, schools/universities gone, Holy Sites gone, food~Palestinians are being tortured by being told they have to move to a different place to be safe...and the Israel bombs in the "safe place"..most recently...a 30 foot deep hole in the ground where families were living in tents...in place that Israel said would be safe...Israel has done this multiple times over this year..Israel with total support of the US Govt is committing Genocide/Ethnic Cleansing which are against International law.....Sad that you can't see their suffering...there right to live...raise their children...be able to feed their children and themselves....Silly Silly you...I feel sorry for you~

Don’t feel too sorry for me. I don’t live under a theocratic totalitarian government… yet. We’ll see what the next few American elections bring.

Hamas exploits its own peoples’ suffering to further its global Islamic ambitions.

How is it that innocent Jewish university students are hunted down, harassed and sometimes violently assaulted by THE VERY PEOPLE WHO SCREAM ABOUT discrimination and ‘Islamophobia’ ?

How do you defend that? Don’t bother trying.

No one is saying everything would be fine. But most are in agreement that Bibi is largely responsible for the chaos. To begin, his cynical and reprehensible strategy was to procure funding (indirectly and clandestinely) for Hamas so as to enable it to oppose the more moderate Palestinian Authority, with the intention of subverting efforts to achieve a two-state solution. He has consistently flouted international law by promoting illegal settlements on the West Bank and tolerating the systematic terrorization of the Palestinians who reside there. He has pursued a policy in Gaza seemingly aimed at punishing innocent civilians by means of massive and indiscriminate bombings that are viewed as genocide by most of the civilized world and that has resulted in the ICC issuing an arrest warrant for him (as well as the Hamas chief) for war crimes. He clearly is trying to interfere with the US election by overtly embracing the Republicans and Trump. You may not like aspects of Palestinian society (repression of women, gays, etc.) but that does not warrant targeting a civilian population and slaughtering over 40,000 persons, the great majority of whom were innocent non-combatants. In the eyes of most of the world, thanks in large part to Bibi's actions, Israel is perceived as a pariah state. He should be chased from power and tried in the Hague.

It’s very disconcerting the reaction of the Palestinian people to the events on 10/7/2023. It was amazing how quickly Muslims worldwide reacted to those events.

They were almost orgasmic over the rape, torture and murder of people attending a peace festival. Many of these people weren’t even Jews.

It appeared the Muslim diaspora were expecting this barbaric attack on the Jewish people. They were thrilled; they were practicing the very tenets of their religion.

take a look into Israel funding Hamas and also the "stand down" orders to the Israeli soldiers orders at the time of the Oct 7 attack

also, is Israel justified in killing 40,000+ gazans and bombing their entire city? How much blame should be on Israel for funding Hamas? and for the "stand down" order to the soldiers?

There is no chance that a 3rd party candidate will win the election, but a very good chance that they will hurt Harris/ Walz margins, effectively making a vote for Stein or West a vote for Trump. Harris can only be an effective force for good IF she gets elected. All the rest is palaver. In my view this, at this point in time what Harris must do is focus on the key Electoral College votes, in particular Georgia & Pennsylvania to convince those voters to vote for her. Yes, the "war" in Gaza, it's basically a genocidal slaughter, not a war, is a crucial humanitarian issue, but again, the needed change in federal policy toward Israel can only be done by a President willing to alter that policy to push Israel in the right direction. But first she has to get elected.

The number of dead comes from the Gaza Health Ministry, which is controlled by Hamas. We are led to think it's all women and babies. There is never any accounting of the Hamas fighters killed as part of the 40,000. I want to know that. I want a breakdown of the casualties. Of course it is terrible that so many non-combatant Gazan citizens have been killed. It is also terrible that the Gazans supported Hamas for twenty years. Knowing that Israel would retaliate, Hamas did absolutely nothing to protect the citizens of Gaza. Israel builds shelters against an attack. Homes have safe rooms. For Hamas, the casualties are part of the plan. Israel is not engaged in genocide. Just because the dead are Gazans, that does not constitute genocide.

It's easy to use the term genocide. If the Israeli's wanted a genocide, they'd be lining up Palestinians and mowing them down like the Nazi's did during WWII and Pol Pot did in Cambodia and not letting any aid in. That's not happening. Yes. It's a war, but not a genocide. Without UK and US assistance, Israel would be overrun by its enemies and a real genocide of Israeli's would occur.

The Illusion of Justice's avatar

My name is Ted Martin. I just finished writing a book about my first hand encounters with a morbidly corrupt federal judicial system. The book is titled: The Illusion of Justice and contains documented, incontrovertible proof of widespread systemic corruption in the District Court for the Northern District of Illinois, the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals, the United States Supreme Court, the Administrative Office of United States Courts, the Senate Judiciary Committee, and the U.S. Department of Justice.

The Supreme Court not only ignored two of the most egregious cases of judicial misconduct imaginable (my cases) but also an amicus brief by former Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals Judge Richard Posner in which he blows the whistle on rampant corruption in the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals.

Judge Posner’s amicus brief is posted on the Supreme Court’s website at www.supremecourt.gov and can be accessed by typing in the following case number: Martin v. Living Essentials (Case No. 17-8352)

It will be painfully obvious to anyone who reads my book (or Judges Posner’s amicus brief) that the Supreme Court denies certiorari without even bothering to read the petitions submitted by the citizens of the United States. This obscene betrayal of the public trust is a clear-cut violation of every Justice’s judicial oath and a crime under federal law that is commonly referred to as honest services fraud.

In short, my book proves that the leaders of both the Republican and Democratic parties have been conspiring together to pack the courts with corrupt corporate judges who will never side with the American people. This was abundantly clear when Senator Chuck Schumer and the other Democrats on the Senate Judiciary Committee repeatedly refused to use irrefutable evidence of judicial misconduct by Amy Coney Barrett (a Republican nominee) at her Supreme Court confirmation hearing.

This bipartisan band of seditious conspirators also refused to address the underlying corruption in clear violation of their oath to “support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic.”

The only difference between the two major political parties is the rhetoric. The special interest groups running this country don’t give a damn which bribe taking stooge you vote for or even if you vote at all. They have already successfully rigged every election by controlling “our” choices.

The leaders of both the Republican and Democratic parties have been caught red-handed conspiring to pack the courts with corrupt judges who will never side with you. If there was ever a reason to be a one issue voter, this is it. Besides, any politician caught lying about their fidelity to the Constitution and laws of the United States is obviously lying about everything—particularly their agenda.

Republicans push the corrupt corporate agenda. Democrats pretend to be opposed. Together, they sell their offices to the highest bidders. They foment war for the military industrial complex, promote racism for the prison industrial complex, refuse to restrict access to assault weapons for the gun manufactures, permit large quantities of toxic cancer causing chemicals to be dumped into our air, land, and water for the chemical manufactures, deny needed medical care to our country’s citizens for the health insurance and pharmaceutical industries, and turn a willful blind eye to the catastrophic effects of global warming for the fossil fuel industries. The list of their greed fueled crimes against humanity goes on and on.

Voting your current elected representatives out of office should be a no brainer. But, to make sure that they are not replaced with another batch of equally corrupt corporate stooges, we’re also going to have to take back both the Republican and Democratic parties and get the money out of politics.

While this may appear to be a daunting task, all we really need is a sound plan. After giving this matter some careful consideration, I have the following proposal: We agree to put aside all of our ideological differences and unite as Americans in support of the Constitution of the United States.

If you read my book, it really won’t be that difficult. You will know who the real enemy is and it certainly isn’t your fellow citizens. We just need to become one issue voters. Ignore their contrived wedge issues, bullshit talking points, and cringe worthy campaign ads. If they are not fighting tooth and nail to get the money out of politics—don’t legitimize them with your vote.

Seriously, if in doubt—throw them out. Besides, any government official who is not forcefully calling for the resignations of the corrupt leaders of their own political party is, by definition, violating their oath to “support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic.”

Whether Republican or Democrat, a treasonous corporate criminal is a treasonous corporate criminal, they serve the same master and nothing is going to change until we get the money out of politics.

*You get the money out of politics by publicly funding elections, banning all campaign contributions, and, in exchange for their broadcasting/operating licenses, requiring news organizations to give every candidate for public office an equal amount of free advertising space.

In the future, I may write a book titled: The Illusion of Journalism. But for now, I’m just going to say that the media is not going to help anyone blow the whistle on their partners in crime. In the past four years, I couldn’t find a single news organization that hadn’t sold us out.

All an honest journalist would have to do is read Judge Posner’s amicus brief to know that the courts are irretrievably corrupt. Reading my book will conclusively show that the courts are corrupt by design.

If you want a government that actually acts in your best interests, I urge you and everyone you know to read my book as soon as possible. You can get a digital copy of my book free of charge at the link below: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1_vaMH1riLodzOfQn0kI7ow0RDrPM0NqE/view?usp=sharing
