Dr. Ginette Poulin
Family physician in Thompson through the Burntwood Regional Health Authority
Currently we have 14 family physicians in Thompson. We service a good chunk of the North, including most First Nations reserves. People with health issues are stabilized and come to us first, then if they’re too acute they will go down to Winnipeg. So we’re the first level of intervention for many of the surrounding communities where they may not have any services.
We do also go out to these communities – to Oxford House, to Nelson House, to Cross Lake, to Wabowden, on and on. And when you think of it, if we weren’t here, and Vale were to shut down the smelter and refinery, what kind of services are left to offer to the community here?
I feel very strongly that if you look at statistics in terms of healthcare, this area has the highest rates of mental health issues, suicides, diabetes, obesity, smoking, traumatic accidents, gangs, just on and on.
The needs are here. I feel very strongly that’s part of the reason why I myself came back to the community. I was raised here, and then I returned back to the community in September 2010.
It would be very unfortunate to see how much work and services we are providing – to see that potentially go out the window.
Lots of times in today’s world, it’s easy to get wrapped up in the individual level, looking out for ourselves – what’s best for me? Where can I get the best paying job? And yes, that plays a role. But I think that in today’s society, it’s very important that people take a step back and look at the big picture and look at our communities, take a stand, and care about people because ultimately that comes back to us in life.
