I hope a light-bulb goes on with the government and somebody will step up and say this can’t happen. If I could talk to the Prime Minister of Canada, I’d tell him to stop the foreign takeovers of Canadian-grown companies. Because they come in, they take our resources, and they close us down.
I represent over 400 members in my local union. Right now, they just want to get their homes sold and get out of here. It’s not a good feeling in Thompson now. Retirees just want to get out of here.
Even some of the younger ones are looking to get out. They want to go somewhere where there’s job security. They don’t want to be stuck in five years. House prices are starting to drop already. Years ago there were other layoffs, and at that time people just handed their keys to the bank and left. That’s probably what we’re looking at again.
At a meeting with Vale, I did ask the CEO, “So at the end of 5 years when 500 employees are gone, how could you help out? Could Vale buy out the homes that aren’t going to sell?” He didn’t go for that.
Thompson may be a small town, but people from all over North America should care about this because it can happen anywhere. This can happen anywhere there’s a big plant that’s open to a foreign takeover. We should be concerned as North Americans about letting these multinationals in, only to buy us out, clean us out, and then leave.
I think this is going to devastate Thompson. Five years from now? I don’t know what’s going to happen here. It’s really hard to watch.
