What brought me to Thompson was Inco. That’s where my dad started working when I was five and I've been in an Inco family ever since then. It went from my dad working at Inco, to my husband working at Vale and now my brother is also working at Vale. We always considered ourselves an Inco family.
It wasn't until last year Vale finally brought back Family Day and that was a thing that Inco did every year. I used to enjoy that. I used to go to my dad's workplace. They had a BBQ and stuff for kids to do. Inco was a family company. Now, to me, Vale is more out for the money than they are about the family aspect.
Now with Vale taking over it's not the same. My dad is working in the refinery right now. My brother is working in the smelter. And my husband up until recently was working in the smelter, but he moved underground to the mine.
It's mostly my family that I’m scared about – my dad and my brother. The reason why we managed to all stay together is that everybody got good jobs in the same area. We haven't been split up. I'm pretty sure with everything closing, everybody is going to go their separate places.
Family is very important to me. I'm sad. And angry. But, mostly sad. It would be a sad day to see my family go their own ways.
I want to know why Vale would put us in jeopardy. This was ours, a Canadian company. I think that if it wasn't for the foreign takeover, everything would be going normally.
All my memories are here. It's been my home and now I don't know.
