I will always consider Thompson my home and I always say “it’s where my heart is.”
Thompson is truly the “Hub of the North.” It thrives on serving outlying communities and businesses open because of these outlying communities. In Manitoba urban centres, Thompson has the highest aboriginal population per capita in Canada. We have a huge population that the Friendship Centre offers programs to. There is a range of approximately 40 to 50 thousand people accessing Thompson on a regular basis.
Businesses make decisions based on usage and population, so once these jobs are gone, some services may be shipped back down to Winnipeg, making it much harder for the northern First Nations and Métis communities in our area to access. It is a long trip that will be difficult to take in many situations, especially during times of illness.
It gets so tiring when large corporations and big businesses come in and continue to take our resources from the North and not invest in our community for the long term. There has been no involvement with the community in this latest decision and yet they have no problem taking the resources out and no problem making money off it.
