JACK KEANE: Karzai's brother is a thug, in every sense of the word. We're onto him, to all the problems he's causing. Is he mixed up in trafficking of drugs and criminality? Yes. In a very large way in the south.
AVI LEWIS: In all your time –
KEANE: He has a bit of a stranglehold –
LEWIS: In all your time and all your influence that you had under the Bush administration, I don't recall you saying that as forthrightly.
KEANE: I never, ever dealt with Afghanistan with the Bush administration. What I was trying to get them to turn a strategy that was failing in Iraq around into something that could work.
LEWIS: And that move it to Afghanistan.
KEANE: I never a discussion with that administration on that subject. I'm having discussions with this administration on this subject, but never that administration.
LEWIS: When you say Karzai's brother is a thug to them, do they say, we know because the CIA's been paying him?
KEANE: I don't know anything about the CIA paying him. I don't know. It wouldn't surprise me, for crying out loud. Because the fact of the matter is I don't know.
