Dear Friends,
First off, the "TV Nation" segment from 1995 featuring Buford Furrow, the white supremacist who shot the Jewsih kids in L.A., is now up on our website and can be downloaded and viewed in its entirety (remembering, of course, that this is only 1999 and some of this web stuff works about as good as your grandma's television did in 1949). Note how Buford was the one who, once it was determined our reporter "wasn't white," he contradicts the meaner Nazi and says it's OK for our racially-inferior staff member to "wait out here" in the car. Weird.
A man in Chicago drives around on the Sabath last month shooting at Jews, and now this week Buford Furrow pulls off a freeway in L.A. for gas, notices a Jewish center, then decides to go in and spray little kids with bullets. An appropriate end, wouldn't you say, to a century which will be noted thousands of years from now as the one where a large group of German-speaking humans and their later-day admirers went insane and tried to exterminate all the Jews. I was hoping Ricki Martin was becoming so huge that maybe we stood a chance of being known in the 20th century for something else, but after this last month of continued hate and violence against our Jewish brothers and sisters, I guess we might as well just bag this hundred years as one of mankind's worst bummers and move on...

I'm back home now in Michigan, land of casinos. Two guys got robbed coming out of the new casino in Detroit last night (yes, Detroit is an Indian Reservation!), and the spokesperson for the casino told the press, "Hey, it's Detroit, it's a big city, people get robbed in big cities!" But my friends and in-laws want to go to the casinos, so I've spent a few hours there this week and it's amazing -- you don't see anyone from Grosse Pointe in there! I will say this -- soon the Native Americans should have enough money to buy back all the land that was stolen from them. This has got to go down as one of the strangest "lose the battle, win the war" scenarios ever played out in history. Let's all wish them well.
This is one of the best Friday the 13ths I've seen in a long time. "The Blair Witch Project", made for around $60,000, is the biggest hit in the country. What a slap in the face to Hollywood and all its formulaic, tired, stale and predictable movies it foists upon us. They spend hundreds of millions dollars showing us severed heads and young girls who must die because they lost their virginity, and then along comes "Blair Witch" with no violence, no special effects, shot mostly on home video -- and people flock to it. Why? Because it is original, fresh, and scary as shit. It allows your imagination -- yes, you still have one even after watching 87,000 hours of television -- to frighten you. Will Hollywood get the message? Are you kidding? The good news is that if you have an original idea that is compelling in its simplicity, you have a chance to find your audience.
Well, I have to go check out the Warren Beatty for President website. If you didn't see "Bullworth," and you can handle a 60-year old white guy rapping, you should see this movie -- one of the best I've seen in the last year.
Yours,
Michael Moore
