Welcoming the National Rifle Association to Denver

Dear friends:

Thanks for all the ideas on what we should all do to greet the National Rifle Association at their annual convention in Denver tomorrow (Saturday) morning. They ranged from all of us going there dressed as Moses proclaiming with our staffs raised in the air: "IT'S NOT THE GUNS, IT'S THE BULLETS!!", to having the mayor of Denver move the convention to Columbine High School ("where they'll feel more at home").

In fact, a number of students at Columbine along with various citizen groups will be staging a silent protest as they march from the west steps of the capitol building at 9:00am to the NRA convention site at the Adam's Mark Hotel where they will form a giant ring and hold signs. The state capitol building is located in downtown Denver, and the hotel is located at 1550 Court Place, two blocks from the corner of E. Colfax and Broadway. The protest should arrive there around 10:00am.

To all my friends who own guns and hunt the woods of northern Michigan, you are not the problem. To all others who believe guns offer them self-defense in their homes, please note that if you own a handgun you are 43 times more likely to be shot by a gun -- either yours or the bad guy's. Of course, if you come into my house I'll shoot your head off.

Besides, I noticed from news reports this week that the two boys who killed the students began that fateful day going to "bowling class." Bowling class? The NRA is right -- it's not the guns, it's the bowling!

I've got a few more thoughts on this I'll share with you next week.
