Reverend Huckabee: “Whoever in our government leaked that information is guilty of treason, and I think anything less than execution is too kind a penalty.”
Jesus: “Let he who is without sin cast the first stone.” JOHN 8:7
In case you missed the news, soon-to-be Presidential candidate and ordained minister Mike Huckabee said the person who turned over the government cables to Wikileaks ought to be executed as a traitor. Wow, FINALLY someone wants to seek justice for those who break the law and endanger US troops, CIA operatives, and citizens! Why not just keep going, Reverend Huckabee -- you’re on a roll!
Maybe, Reverend Huckabee, you would like to execute the traitors that conceived, approved, carried out, and covered up the illegal torture and kidnappings in Iraq and around the world in our name, thus triggering a round of ACTUAL, not theoretical torture and beheading of US troops and citizens? Didn’t those individuals take an oath to uphold the laws and protect citizens of the United States of America, not subvert them and make us more vulnerable to terrorism? As you know the US violating international law makes it more likely US troops, CIA agents, and citizens will be tortured for decades to come.
Also, Reverend Huckabee, you would certainly find the two men who outed a CIA operative for a partisan political vendetta thereby endangering her and others lives and our national security, to be treasonous and deserving of death -- or as you say, worse. I think their names are Rove and Libby. You might know these guys.
And certainly in your view, Reverend Huckabee, shouldn't we be executing those traitors whose war based on lies led directly to the deaths of over 4,000 Americans in Iraq? Aren’t 4,000 REAL deaths of U.S. citizens worse than non-existent hypothetical deaths? (I am assuming Reverend, you don’t care about the up to a million Iraqis dead since everyone knows that's barely worth mentioning and our government -- lying, once again -- said they didn’t even bother to keep track.)
Or how about the traitor in the State Department who asked American diplomats to illegally spy on those they were supposed to be gaining the trust of, exposing those ambassadors to arrest and possible execution as spies? Should the traitor who endangered our nation's diplomacy and diplomats worldwide get tried for treason and be subject to the death penalty?
Which leads us to another question, Reverend Huckabee: Who would Jesus, the man you say as a Christian you follow, execute? Jesus, you know, that Prince of Peace guy? Or did I get that wrong in Bible School? Maybe Jesus was really the Prince of Torture, Extraordinary Rendition, and Killing a Million People in a War Based on a Lie kind of guy.
Or maybe Reverend Huckabee you’re not so much a Jesus-type Christian but more of an old testament guy like David, who slew ten thousand Philistines because they were uncircumcised, or Elisha who sent bears to rip forty-two children to shreds for teasing him because he was bald. Hoo-rah!
Or maybe you ought to spend more time brushing up on the New Testament, Reverend Huckabee, and less time with the Old Testament, and the hate speech of Beck, O’reilly, Limbaugh and Savage.
Knowing you’re a busy guy, I looked up a few things Jesus said for you, and having been raised Southern Baptist myself they sound sort of familiar:
• “Put your sword in its place, for all who take the sword will perish by the sword.” MATTHEW 26:52
• "You have heard it said, ‘An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.’ But I tell you not to resist an evil person. But whoever slaps you on your right cheek, turn the other to him also.” MATTHEW 5:38-39
• “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.” MATTHEW 5:9
Couldn't find a lot about killing, torturing and executing, lying and spying in there.
Now if you know your Bible history, as I am sure you do, you will know Jesus came to offer love, not hate. Jesus stood up to a terrible empire that ruled people far away in the Middle East where Jesus lived. In Jesus's time the Roman Empire tortured, killed and dominated with armies and swords and cruelty. Sound familiar? It's not an accident that Jesus appeared at such a time and place. Jesus railed against money changers and an oppressive government, church and media (the scribes) that took care of an elite but repressed the poor. Yet Jesus even forgave them for torturing him to death on the cross. Jesus non-violently stood up to the kind of hate, violence and evil represented by the Taliban, Saddam, and yes would now stand up to those in the great Empire of our time, the United State of America, who tries to rule the world with armies, torture, lies and bullying. Jesus would stand up to the hate machine of Fox and Clear Channel, not embrace them.
Here is what Jesus did, when the Empire of his time wanted a sinner killed. Are you with him, or do you stand with the scribes and Pharisees?
1 Jesus went unto the mount of Olives. 2 And early in the morning he came again into the temple, and all the people came unto him; and he sat down, and taught them. 3 And the scribes and Pharisees brought unto him a woman taken in adultery; and when they had set her in the midst, 4 They say unto him, Master, this woman was taken in adultery, in the very act. 5 Now Moses in the law commanded us, that such should be stoned: but what sayest thou? 6 This they said, tempting him, that they might have to accuse him. But Jesus stooped down, and with his finger wrote on the ground, as though he heard them not. 7 So when they continued asking him, he lifted up himself, and said unto them, He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her. 8 And again he stooped down, and wrote on the ground. 9 And they which heard it, being convicted by their own conscience, went out one by one, beginning at the eldest, even unto the last: and Jesus was left alone, and the woman standing in the midst. 10 When Jesus had lifted up himself, and saw none but the woman, he said unto her, Woman, where are those thine accusers? hath no man condemned thee? 11 She said, No man, Lord. And Jesus said unto her, Neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more.
