Donna Smith, American SiCKO, is executive director of the Health Care for All Colorado Foundation
It seemed on September 11, 2001, we didn't care so much whether individuals trapped in the Twin Towers of The World Trade Center or on the airplanes used as missiles in Pennsylvania and DC were rich or poor, were homeowners or renters, or had health insurance or not. We knew they were victims of a criminal act, and we knew it could just as easily have been one of our own family or even ourselves. We knew that kind of killing of innocents was wrong. And we aimed to stop whoever did the killing from killing any more people.
I just wish we could view the killing, suffering and the financial injury happening in the US health care system with the same sense of clarity and humanity. I wish we knew that the innocents who die and go broke for the health careindustry to profit in America are just like the people in those buildings or in the planes 12 years ago. Many have insurance and are just going about their lives when they get sick or hurt, and then they find out that the US health care system cares about one thing as its primary goal -- making money and lots of it.
Health care is a human right. Feeling safe and secure about that right to care is something we all ought to understand after seeing that lives can change in an instant, without warning and without any way to anticipate the loss of health, job, or other things that often took years to secure.
To the memory of those lost in the 2001 terror attacks, and to the memory and honor of the 540,000 health care system dead in America in the 12 years since that day because they lacked the health care insurance or cash/credit to pay for care. If we had an improved and expanded Medicare for all for life, those 540,000 lives could have been saved. But, our resolve isn't strong enough yet to end the killing of these innocents. I pray it will be some day very soon.
September 11, 2013 -- Today's count of the health care dead and broke for profit in the U.S.:
The 2013, to date, U.S. medical-financial-
industrial -complex system dead: 31,129
The 2013, to date, U.S. health care system
** These figures are calculated based on the Harvard University studies on excess deaths in the U.S. due to lack of insurance coverage or the ability to pay for needed health care, and the Harvard University study that calculated the high percentage of personal bankruptcies attributable to medical crisis and debt in the U.S. 123 people die daily due to lack of coverage or cash to pay for care; 1,978 go bankrupt every day due to medical crisis and debt though the majority had insurance at the time their illness or injury occurred. This statistic is also based on the 1.2 million bankruptcies in the U.S. in 2012, according to the U.S. Bankruptcy Court, and calculating those medically-related bankruptcies from that number.http://www.healthcareforallcolorado.org/endorse_right_to_health_care
