Even the best of us slip up. Occasionally, our most brilliant minds will succumb to a temporary lapse of sanity. Whether it’s the star baseball player that swings for the fences when he should have bunted or the politician that says something inappropriate at an inopportune time, nobody is immune to doing or saying something completely off the wall.
Take Ron Paul for instance. On many fronts, the Congressman from Texas has some extremely brilliant ideas. But something he said in Bloomberg News just absolutely takes his renegade style of politics to what is far beyond the tolerable level. On the subject of the debt ceiling, which by the way neither the Democrats or Republicans haven’t come to an agreement yet; he said the following. “If these major defaults didn’t result in decreased investor appetite for U.S. obligations, I see no reason why defaulting on a small amount of debt would cause any major changes.”
I’d like to speak for a second to the people of Texas. I’m not sure you realize this, but when you elected Ron Paul to Congress you picked him to make decisions on your behalf. That means every decision. From building parks to bridges all the way down to the money. Now that our government is having a crisis with money where the nation might not be able to pay its bills, what is Ron Paul saying? Let’s just not pay them! That’s correct, if you have a bill that’s coming up like electric or your gas bill; don’t pay it. Everything will be fine. Just remember when they come to shut off your power to tell them that Ron Paul said it was ok.
Of course we all know what an ignorant statement that is. The reason Ron Paul can say this is that he’s got some money tucked away somewhere. Like most high level politicians, he is taken care of financially. Chances are, he has a car that’s furnished for him, and he already had some kind of bankroll that helped him get into office in the first place. If interest rates skyrocketed in the wake of a national default, it wouldn’t affect him too much. But for the segment of America that aren’t politicians, which is most of us; it would have a very damaging effect. Imagine going to make your car payment and it ends up being almost double because the interest rate skyrocketed. That’s just one of the examples of what could happen if we took Ron Paul’s advice or if an agreement isn’t reached soon.
Of course, there is around a week left until this default is supposed to occur. What bothers me and should bother everyone is why the Democrats and the GOP are still squabbling over this so close to the end. Earlier in the year when they averted a government shutdown, the first thing they should have done is sat down and figured out this debt ceiling mess. They knew this was going to happen, and they knew it was going to happen for months now. But instead of tending to the business that needed to be tended to, they waited until the last minute. They could have come to a conclusion on this weeks ago. But instead, they are making the American people sit nervously on the edge of their seats wondering what is going to happen. Both sides are doing nothing more than engaging in political posturing and trying to soften each other up for the 2012 elections. Because when it comes down to it, that’s what it seems they really care about. Keeping their jobs. More importantly, the entitlements that come with thier jobs. That way they won’t be subjected to the same problems we will face if they can’t agree.
