I want to preface the following column with a little bit of background information. I am a veteran of the United States Navy. I served for four years, with most of that time stationed onboard the USS Bataan. Two combat deployments to the Middle East. One shortly after 9/11 and one when President Bush ordered the invasion of Iraq.
The past few columns I have written, I’ve gotten a little bit of feedback regarding my stance on Republican Presidential candidate Ron Paul. Some of the readers that have contacted me, grilling me on the fact that I am merely pointing out the things I believe to be wrong with Ron Paul’s stance on certain issues. Namely when he said during the debt ceiling crisis that the government should default on some of its debt. Boy that did that start a fire or two.
There are some folks that are so loyal to a particular politician that no matter how much you agree with them; you disagree on one issue or find one of their ideas to be ridiculous they want to burn you at the stake. I happen to agree with Ron Paul on several issues. Problem is, the ones I disagree with him on are so out of left field it muddies the water.
As a veteran, I have to agree with Ron Paul that we need to get the troops home as soon as possible. I’m solidly in his camp on that. Problem is, we simply can’t get them home today. And don’t blame Obama for not getting them back as soon as I and everyone else wants. Bush put them there. Don’t get mad because Barack can’t get them back tomorrow.
Ron Paul has some good ideas, but his bad ones are just too left field. Some of his statements as well. Like at the GOP debate, saying he would like to see the FAA abolished and the job of air traffic control handed over to the airlines. That is one idea that simply just won’t work. Look people, you’re lucky if the airlines get your bag to your destination. Can you imagine what would happen if the airlines were suddenly in charge of the traffic control? It would be absolute madness!
Also, several of the videos and articles I have seen on Ron Paul constantly talk about how he is for the constitution. Talk about an empty statement. You’re an elected official. You’re supposed to be for the constitution! All making that statement does is try to convince people you stand for something when really you’re just letting out a bunch of hot air. Saying something like that doesn’t accomplish anything other than waste time as opposed to telling us your actual agenda.
Look, I know that Ron Paul’s got some good ideas. But his ideas are just so unbalanced from each other that he just screams inconsistency. And think about if he did get elected. Then suddenly realized that maybe he can’t get the troops home as soon as he wanted or promised. He would be in the same exact position that Obama is in now. His heart is in the right place, but his head is too far up in the clouds to be taken seriously.
