Roman Catholic Bishops Ignoring Injustice in Grand Blanc, Michigan
As a married, Roman Catholic priest, I have been steeped in the social teaching of the Catholic Church and have spent years with the poor and workers of Flint and Lansing, MI., Washington D.C. and Central America. So, the recent troubles at a Flint-area hospital caught my attention.
A recent political cartoon depicts Pope Benedict XVI, in response to priest abuse in the Catholic Church, with his eyes closed and fingers in his ears. In a similar posture, Michigan's Roman Catholic bishops are closing their eyes and ears to a serious justice issue at a Catholic hospital in Grand Blanc, MI. This hospital, Genesys Medical Center, is presently acting in violation of basic and binding Roman Catholic teaching relative to the dignity of work and the right of workers to collectively bargain for fair economic and working conditions.
I have made several phone calls and sent e-mails to the Michigan Catholic Conference to ask about the position of Michigan's bishops on the Genesys situation. My inquiries have not been answered. I have also e-mailed the local bishop, Earl Boyea, who stated he prefers meeting 'quietly' with hospital board members and would not be meeting with concerned citizens.
While the workers at Genesys are being fired, services downsized, and conditions deteriorating, the corporate head of Genesys, Ascension Health, acts outside of 128 years of sound and just Catholic social teaching.
I will be following this situation during the upcoming weeks.
