At the time of this writing, it is still unclear as to whether New Jersey Governor Chris Christie will run for President. A movement like this if he does run will definitely be a game changer in the GOP field if he does make the decision to run. With Perry losing ground, and Bachmann not really having anything to offer other than vague statements backed up by incorrect research, an eventual entering of Christie into the GOP race would definitely put some life into their chances unseating President Obama next year.
Not being particularly loyal to any one political party, I have the benefit of being able to look at things a little more clearly. During the events leading up to and during Hurricane Irene, Governor Christie was almost masterful in his handling of the disaster. Although at times he came across as a gruff correcting parent(I’m of course referencing the “get the hell off the beach” comment), he was exactly what people living in the area needed in terms of a leader in time of disaster. He was keeping everyone well informed and the handling of the disaster by every government leader, Christie included, will be looked at in the future almost as a handbook on handling a natural disaster.
The only stumbling blocks he will probably face if he does decide to run will be his decisions regarding the New Jersey state budget. He’s gone after the state budget with a hacksaw at times; but this might be looked at in a positive light by folks that are looking for more sweeping financial reform than we are getting. He’s got just as good a chance as anyone in the GOP to unseat Obama, and he hasn’t unofficially entered the race yet.
That being said, will you folks that are saying he wouldn’t be a good president because he’s overweight please shut up? I mean come on, that’s your one sticking point, because he’s a big guy? Of all the issues that the United States is facing right now, saying a guy wouldn’t be a good leader because he’s got a few extra pounds on him is irresponsible and shows as much bigotism towards someone as the Ku Klux Klan shows towards African Americans. It’s an irresponsible way of thinking. Just because the guy is heavy.
The human brain of almost all fully grown adults is around three pounds. You don’t make decisions on foreign policy with your stomach. If this is such a big deal that a presidential candidate is doing something that’s “unhealthy”, than why aren’t we calling for Obama’s impeachment because he smokes? How soon people forget that some of our country’s former presidents were on the heavy side. William Howard Taft was over 350 pounds when he was president. Big deal! To say a guy wouldn’t be a good example as president because of a physical issue is mind boggling. For Christ’s sake, FDR couldn’t walk!
Whether a guy smokes, can’t walk, is overweight or has a twitch; it shouldn’t matter. It shouldn’t be an issue. The issues should be an issue. If you’re going to vote against someone, vote because you think the other guy has better ideas. Not because he’s skinnier than the other guy. And don’t start saying the “what about the children” rhetoric. They have enough education on nutrition and weight management as it is. Governor Christie is just as big a contender for president on his ideas alone. Leave his physical stature the hell out of it.
