Donna Smith
Donna Smith, American SiCKO, is a national single-payer healthcare advocate and community organizer with the California Nurses Association/National Nurses Organizing Committee
I am a woman, a mother, a grandmother, a wife.
I am not an austerity measure – in Greece or in any other nation.
I am a caregiver. I am a worker. I am a patient. I am a taxpayer.
I am not an entitlement cut or a medical loss ratio or an efficiency measure or a political bargaining chip.
I am the proud daughter of a World War II veteran; I am the proud mother of a soldier in Operation Enduring Freedom.
I am not a fan of war.
I am an asthmatic who struggles to breathe when air quality is diminished as do so many others.
I am not in favor of lowering our air quality standards on the hopes of greater profits for a few.
I am worried. I am stressed. I am scared. I am angry.
I am not giving up without fighting for what matters to me.
I am a woman, a mother, a grandmother, a wife who sees needless suffering in a world of plenty.
I am not fooled; I am not confused.
I am a caregiver. I am a worker. I am a taxpayer.
I am not your profit. I am not your entitlement. I am not your tool.
I am a woman of faith.
I am not ashamed of that, and having a faith does not make me dumber nor does it make me better than anyone else.
I am fed up and fighting back.
I am not giving up or letting anyone make me less than I am.
I am the young people protesting on Wall Street, the nurses and healthcare workers striking in California, the citizens on the streets in Athens, a mother holding her starving child in Africa and the grandmother in Japan who knows no relief from natural and man-made disaster.
I am not unaware of the powerful few allowing the suffering of so many and benefiting from that suffering.
I am just one woman, one mother, one grandmother and one wife.
I am not alone -- millions of other women, other mothers, other grandmothers, other wives, caregivers, workers, taxpayers, patients and persons of faith all over the world know the truth, and it will set us free.
