I rarely agree with anything that anyone at Townhall.com puts into print. I don’t exactly appreciate the Obama bashing. Sometimes I think that they just blindly bash any Democrat and their agenda. But amidst all of the bashing of Democrats and the vilification of President Obama on a daily basis, I actually found something that they and I agree on. Donald Trump running for president is a bad idea. Bad idea for Republicans, and a bad idea for the country in general.
The article by Thomas Sowell asks what his appeal is. Well I would have to say to Mr. Sowell that his appeal is roughly the same appeal as a clown at the circus. When a clown is in his element at Ringling Bros. we all laugh and smile. We’re entertained and enjoy it all for a brief moment. But we wouldn’t want the same clown running the country. That’s what Donald Trump is, a horrifically rich clown. Go into one of his casinos. The candy shops have chocolate bars with his name embossed on the wrapper. That just screams cry for attention; as if he doesn’t have enough of it already.
His other appeal to the uninformed is that he is a really rich man. People going all the way back to the beginning of civilization tend to lean towards the ones with the most money to guide them. Because he’s rich, people think he’s a good prospect for running the country. The man has had more bankrupt companies than some work for in their entire lives. Just because he’s filthy rich doesn’t give him any qualities that make him a leader. It just gives him a giant stack of money. People need to see that money does not equal leadership ability.
The whole thing is one big publicity stunt as I have stated before in a previous column. Part of me would hope to think that he is for real at doing this, but announcing yes or no on a game show just sullies the office and everyone who has ran. Take a man like Senator McCain. I may not have agreed with his ideas and plans, but I still felt a sense of respect toward the man. He ran with some kind of honor and dignity. He didn’t try to bring the circus along with him. That’s what Trump is doing here. I just think personally that he is more concerned with the fun of running for president than actually doing the job if he wins. Which is highly unlikely. He’s too much of a bully to begin with when dealing with people. He’d sink in the debates just on that idea alone. He’s too much of a bulldog to be universally likeable.
However, If he does end up running on a Republican ticket; it would be the death knell for their 2012 hopes. If it came down to President Obama and Donald Trump, Obama would win hand over fist. Thankfully, that’s one of the benefits of the lengthy primary process. Weeding out the unworthy and unserious candidates. I’d rather have Obama lose re-election in a fair fight against a worthy contender than win against a joke act like Donald Trump.
So whether you are a Democrat or a Republican, you should hope Donald Trump drop his “I wanna be president” garbage and go back to whatever he was doing before. And soon. Because the longer we let him go on, the greater a chance someone that’s actually qualified gets edged out of their rightful spot. Be it Obama or not.
