Coleen Rowley
Former FBI agent Coleen Rowley was one of three whistleblowers chosen as persons of the year by TIME magazine in 2002
Last night our group of over 50 “Minnesotans for Peace” asked Al Franken “What Would Wellstone Do?” The response was extremely disappointing.
To be clear, Franken’s staff and the St. Paul police officers are to be commended for their patience, professionalism and willingness to listen. Al Franken is to be thanked for taking the time to respond with his views and to disclose to us his decision to support the Af-Pak escalation by voting for the upcoming $33 billion war supplemental. (There are probably not many elected leaders who would be so forthcoming.)
But the saddest and most disappointing thing is that nothing has changed since Bush began the pre-emptive wars. The marches and efforts of millions at the start did not matter. The elections don’t matter. Nothing changes. The rationales about the noble cause our troops are fighting and dying for, and killing thousands of civilians in the process has been debunked over and over. Look at the comments after the Star Tribune editorial today about Karzai’s perfidy in threatening to join the Taliban. The common people seem to be the only ones who remember Vietnam and know the awful truth of being in an “unwinnable” quagmire. Our elected leaders take the easy route and follow their party leaders and do not choose to question or act in the people’s interests.
P.S. There is a bet among the White House Press Corps now on the date that Karzai will meet with an untimely end. Obama has openly declared that he has the power to assassinate (even American citizens!) whom he suspects of being an enemy (see article) so the White House press bet is not a stretch of the imagination. You can imagine all the “economic hit men” who, at the very least, have been dispatched to get Karzai back on message.
