Niki Ashton represents the electoral district of Churchill in Manitoba in the Canadian parliament
It is becoming an all too familiar pattern.
A foreign takeover approved by the Conservative government. Promises of jobs and investment. Corporate tax breaks and subsidies. Then an attack on jobs, wages, pensions and benefits.
January 1st 2012, the latest battleground for workers became the Caterpillar plant in London, Ontario and the Rio Tinto Alcan plant in Alma, Quebec. In both cases the workers were locked out in a fight against major contract concessions. In the case of Caterpillar that includes wage cuts of nearly 50 percent!
Caterpillar is a poster company for Conservative Prime Minister Stephen Harper's old politics. Three years ago Stephen Harper used the Caterpillar plant as a backdrop to announce a $5-million federal tax break for the already profitable company. So much for giving tax breaks to profitable corporations.
Canadian workers are fighting to save the wages, benefits, pensions and jobs they have fought for over decades against foreign companies that Stephen Harper's Conservatives allowed to take over Canadian companies.
This is a pattern that is being repeated around the world. It is nothing less than a wholesale attack on the jobs and livelihoods of working people.
It is time to send a clear message. We have to fight to save our jobs and livelihoods in London, Alma and across the country. We must and we will join with working people around the world to fight for fairness and equality.
