Couple of quick political pieces for all of you. I sit down at the desk to write something about the Hurricane Irene media coverage and what do I get hit with? Link after link of Republican presidential hopeful Michele Bachmann stating that the hurricane was God’s way of telling us all to cut spending. You know something, if someone is able to say something that ridiculous in the wake of a disaster that flooded a good portion of the east coast; they might not be presidential material. In the coming months you are going to see the GOP herd thin out little by little. Hopefully this is something that triggers Bachmann eventually getting out of the race. For someone to say something so tasteless and cutting while people are trying to get their lives back to normal after the disaster is plain irresponsible. Kind of like that scene in “The Dead Zone” when Martin Sheen holds up the baby to shield himself from an assassin’s bullet. Very wrong place, very wrong time to make a statement like that Michele. And by the way, nobody cares if you were joking either. Just an irresponsible thing for someone that is trying to gain trust in the voting public to say. Not the first time she has put her foot in her mouth. Probably won’t be the last.
Last night the National Geographic channel aired a program that almost seemed like it was someone trying to cleanse their soul for a mistake they made. It was touted as the one angle on 9/11 we have not heard yet. The interview on television last night with George W. Bush. While I admire the fact that he didn’t want to scare the children and kept on reading to them; he certainly still should have gotten up and left immediately after hearing the news. Him stalling like that could have prevented the planes to hit the Pentagon or Flight 93 from happening. After watching it I deduced that this show was him in a roundabout way apologizing for whatever mistakes he made in the initial handling of the situation. Kind of like when a child apologizes after breaking a cookie jar. Sure, we know you are sorry but you can’t put it back together. I’m still waiting for the Nat Geo interview a couple of years from now where he explains the invasion of Iraq to everyone. I sure won’t be the only veteran looking for an explanation there.
Just want to give a quick reminder to people reading my column either again or for the first time to please leave comments whenever possible. Thank you all very much.
