CRAWFORD — Peace activist Cindy Sheehan completed voter registration documentation at the Crawford Post Office Tuesday morning.
After becoming a McLennan County property owner following her recent purchase of five acres of land near Crawford, Sheehan has established Camp Casey III, where persons opposed to war will be gathering during President Bush’s annual August vacation at his ranch.
Last year, Sheehan and her supporters launched a 26-day vigil along the roadways leading to the Prairie Chapel ranch, establishing two camps, Camp Casey I and Camp Casey II.
Having outgrown them with attendance at the gatherings, Sheehan decided to build a larger camp.
The camps were named after her son, Casey, who was killed in Iraq in 2004.
Sheehan’s mission has been to meet personally with President Bush and to inquire "for what noble cause" her son died in Iraq.
At an Interfaith service held on Camp Casey III this past Sunday, Sheehan announced that she planned to register to vote in Texas and will be obtaining a Texas drivers’ license.
On Sunday, Sheehan and about 40 other marchers made their way from the former Camp Casey I and carried banners to a checkpoint outside of Bush’s ranch. The lead banner read: "For What Noble Cause."
During this week, protesters have stationed themselves at the checkpoint to denounce the war in Iraq and the war policies of the Bush Administration.
