About 20 supporters of Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama gathered outside the Carlisle Avenue gate of the York Expo Center with signs. They shouted as John McCain supporters drove in the gate to see Sarah Palin.
"You can't put lipstick on a pig!" shouted Don Johnstone, of Philadelphia, with Sheet Metal Workers International.
The Obama supporters occasionally engaged in yelling matches with one McCain supporter, Mark Franker, who held a sign across the street. Franker said it's all in good fun.
"We have different ideas," he said.
Democratic Congressional candidate Phil Avillo, running for District 19, spoke about taxes to the group, saying McCain and Palin would mean more of the same.
"Pennsylvania's ready for a change," he said. "We tried things John McCain's way and George Bush's way, and it's been an absolute failure."
