Two protesters interrupted Vice President Dick Cheney during a speech at the Hyatt Regency in downtown Dallas on Friday. At the same time, demonstrators gathered outside of the hotel to protest the war in Iraq.
Cheney was giving a speech on policy issues during an event presented by the World Affairs Council of Dallas Fort Worth.
One woman wearing a shirt that read "Bring our Troops Home Now" yelled: "Out of Iraq now! Don't attack Iran."
Security escorted her out.
Minutes later, another protester stood up, waving an extended index finger at Cheney, objecting to any potential attack on Iran. He also was led out.
Outside the hotel, about 50 protesters, some donning costumes, shouted criticisms of the war and the Bush administration.
They also held signs listing troop death levels and calling for impeachment. One protester was dressed as Darth Vader, a reference to Cheney’s supposed resemblance to the movie character.
"We're out here to protest Vice President Cheney's imperial delusions," protester John Fullwinder said.
The demonstrators, most of whom were with the Dallas Peace Center, said the government should focus on other issues.
Linda Coleman said Cheney should be focused on universal health care, not war. "War is not patriotic ... there are other things to be patriotic about than more war," she said.
Cheney is defending the war effort in Iraq and Afghanistan, saying there's no reasoning with some U.S. adversaries there.
He also stressed that Iran is a growing threat, but that the U.S. was trying to diplomatically resolve differences with the country.
"Iran is a serious problem, not just for the United States, but especially for people living in the area. They are actively seeking to enrich uranium. They are trying to topple the government of Lebanon. They are actively involved in supporting insurgents inside Iraq and Afghanistan," Cheney said.
He also said Iran was hostile toward the government of Israel.
Cheney and his wife, Lynne, arrived at Dallas Love Field Thursday afternoon to a waving crowd and members of the news media.
Lynne Cheney appeared on FOX 4’s "Good Day" program early Friday morning to discuss her newly-released memoir, "Blue Skies, No Fences."
