Lieberman's Objections Cause WikiLeaks More Problems
The Lede has learned that a Seattle-based software company, Tableau, which provides a free Web platform for interactive graphics, removed charts linked to by WikiLeaks in response to Sen. Joe Lieberman's public statement that companies should stop helping the whistle-blowers.
After The Lede reported - in our 2:38 p.m. update - that a WikiLeaks activist had noted that the charts on the cables had been taken down, a representative of the company explained that the company had decided to remove the data after reading a statement posted online by Mr. Lieberman, who successfully pressed Amazon to stop hosting WikiLeaks.org on Wednesday. Tableau said that WikiLeaks had violated the terms of service of its free Web platform by posting material that it did not own the rights to. The company argued, as YouTube has in the past, that it does not pre-screen the content uploaded to its free Web platform by users but does respond to complaints when they arise.
Mr. Lieberman's statement welcoming Amazon's decision to stop hosting the WikiLeaks site and encouraging other Web companies to follow suit, was taken as a complaint by Tableau.
