LOS ANGELES -- The mercury hit 113 degrees in downtown Los Angeles Monday, making it the hottest day on record in L.A, according to the National Weather Service.
According to weather.com the temperature in downtown Los Angeles hit 113 degrees around 12:15 p.m., Santa Monica hit 96, West Hollywood was at 108, Lancaster was 98, Pomona 107, Sylmar at 112 and Long Beach was at 108.
The old record in downtown L.A. was 112 degrees on June 26, 1990. The National Weather Service began keeping records in 1877, according to Stuart Seto, a forecaster with the NWS.
The Los Angeles Unified School District canceled all outdoor activities for Monday because of excessive heat. With temperatures well past 100 degrees in the West San Fernando Valley, football coaches are switching practices to the gym or using the time for video sessions.
At least one woman was sent to the hospital over the weekend after suffering from heat exhaustion.
A red flag warning is in effect for the mountains of Los Angeles and Ventura counties and residents are being asked to avoid using appliances between 3:00 and 5:00 p.m. as the triple digit temperatures are expected to put pressure on the state's electrical grid.
Several small wildfires broke out Sunday but were quickly knocked down, including one that came close to homes in South Pasadena before firefighters stopped it.
According to the NWS, the hot and dry conditions are expected to peak early this week before the high pressure ridge causing the current hot weather will move east by the middle to the end of the week, bringing on a cooling trend.
Consumers are expected to use more than 45,000 megawatts by peak afternoon hours, according to Cal-ISO, which coordinates power for 85% of the state's grid. Experts are asking consumers to avoid using heavy appliances, like air conditioners, washing machines during the afternoon hours when the pressure on the state's grid is the highest.
Visitors, tourists, hikers, and anyone working outdoors should take necessary precautions to prevent heat related stress and illness. Avoid strenuous outdoor activity if possible. If you have to be outside, drink plenty of water, wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothing and wear a hat. And never leave children or pets in enclosed vehicles.
