Today the “Slacker Uprising Tour” rolled into Oregon

With just 14 days left till Election Day we couldn’t be more confident of a Kerry victory!!!

Today the “Slacker Uprising Tour” rolled into Oregon, a state Gore carried by just under 7,000 votes in 2000 and a definite background in this election. If the raucous atmosphere in our back-to-back sold-out shows is any indication, Oregon and its 7 electoral votes will be staying Blue!

In the morning Mike spoke before 4,500 progressive and energetic students at the University of Oregon in Eugene. The event was co-sponsored by The Young Voters Project (popularly known as “Vote Mob”), who reported signing up nearly 150 volunteers to help in their get-out-the-vote efforts in these crucial final two weeks. Vote Mob has been doing tremendous work on the ground in this state, registering first time voters in record numbers to ensure that Bush and his failed policies can do no more harm to the working families of their state (Oregon has seen the highest unemployment jump in the past four years out of any state, with a raise of nearly 7%).

The city of Eugene has long been a progressive hotbed in the state and today it showed. Mike was firing on all cylinders, lashing out at Bush for his disastrous and illegal war, while convincing the Nader supporters in attendance that "Ralph is right. His positions are great, but we're facing a nightmare here, and we have to remove George Bush from the White House. And you're not going to defeat George Bush."

The evening brought us to the state capital, Salem, and Willamette University, before a sold-out crowd of over 7,500. The ACT & MoveOn tables, set up to recruit volunteers, were flooded with young people determined to get involved in the most crucial election of their lives.

One of the MoveOn organizers I spoke to tonight said one girl who approached their table to fill out a commitment card remarked that Mike’s speech made her feel like she was living in the sixties. Well, the times certainly are a-changin’. Slackers are rising up and that spells trouble for the Bush administration.

Tomorrow we’ll be rallying the troops at Portland State and then its off to Seattle, where Mike will address a crowd of over 13,000 at Key Arena home to the Seattle Supersonics.

More to come…
