Blogger Profile: Joan Wile
Joan Wile is a grandmother of 5 who founded Grandmothers Against the War over 6 years ago. Among their many activities, they were arrested and jailed when they tried to enlist at the Times Square recruiting center, in Oct., 2005, which became a world-wide story overnight. They've traveled to Europe and to Washington to speak, rally, lobby and perform. They hold vigils, demonstrations, protests, all sorts of actions, and do shows written mostly by Wile, who is an ASCAP lyricist and composer with a long career as a singer in cabarets, recording studios, on movie sound tracks, and on records. Wile has written at least a thousand jingles, songs, film songs, as well as a number of cabaret acts, and 8 musicals, 5 of which were produced off- and off-off Broadway. Wile's first book was published on April 29, 2008, by Citadel Press, entitled "Grandmothers Against the War: Getting off Our Fannies and Standing up for Peace."

We Need a Change of Policy, Not a Change of Generals
I have no expertise about politics, military matters, diplomacy, and all the other things that go into making informed decisions about war and peace. But, it really doesn't take a nuclear physicist to see that we are committing a huge blunder by continuing to fight in Afghanistan.I am quite disappointed ...

Brooklyn High School Seniors Energize the Grandmothers Against the War Vigil at Rockefeller Center
Don't despair, folks. All our young people are not indifferent to the fact that the United States is still engaged in reprehensible occupations of Iraq and Afghanistan. We anti-war grandmothers had heartening proof of this yesterday, April 27, when 20 African-American and Latino Brooklyn high school seniors joined our Grandmothers ...

The Greening of the Gray Panthers
One had always thought of the Gray Panthers as an admirable organization advocating for the dignity and rights of older people, as so brilliantly represented by its founder, the magnetic Maggie Kuhn. But, one would have been not fully informed. On Saturday, April 17, the Panthers celebrated their 40 years of existence, ...

90 Is the New 60
90 is the new 60 these days, it seems, as so impressively demonstrated by several nonagenarians of my acquaintance. In 2003, I founded a peace group in New York City, Grandmothers Against the War, and gradually grannies from all over the Big Apple started gravitating to the group, among them ...

Michael Moore: A Love Story
If you know the Upper West Side of Manhattan, you know there are probably more progressives per square inch here than in all the 50 states. So, it's no surprise that a big bunch of people showed up this evening at my small one-bedroom apartment in this highly liberal neighborhood ...

New York City's Seven Years Too Many Coalition Protests the Iraq War on Its Seventh Anniversary
This piece was written by Edith Cresmer, Granny Peace Brigade, and Joan Wile, author: "Grandmothers Against the War" (Citadel Press 2008)On March 20, 2003, the United States invaded Iraq, a country that posed no threat and that had done us no wrong. The invasion was justified by then-President George W. ...

Rain-Drenched, Wind-Tossed NYC Peace Grannies Hold Memorial for 1,000 Dead G.I.s in Afghanistan
It seems as if most of our U.S. populace has forgotten that U.S. soldiers are dying in Afghanistan. Focused on Tiger Woods' sex life and, more understandably, the seemingly endless, unresolvable health reform and jobs battles in Washington, the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan appear to be ignored. However, a ...
